ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Marauders open up their PSAC schedule with matchups against #10 Cal U and Slippery Rock. Millersville sports a record of 1-3 thus far while the Vulcans sit at 4-1. The Rock is 0-2.
  • In this season's PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Marauders were chosen to finish seventh in the East. Cal U was tabbed as the favorite to win the West, garnering five of nine possible first place votes, while Slippery Rock came in eighth.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville enters this PSAC bout off of a 55-43 road loss to Holy Family on Nov. 26. The game was closer than the score indicates, as the Marauders kept pace with the Tigers through the first 26 minutes despite starting slow on offense.  A Tiger eight-point run at the end of the third quarter was the difference in the contest.
  • The Marauder's offense will be focused on getting the ball to the members of their front court, namely La'Shyra Williams, Morgan Mahoney and Makiah Shaw. Each of the three has shined in different moments thus far. Williams has been the team leader in scoring in each of the past two games and was the only player to reach double-figures against Holy Family (11). The redshirt senior has been efficient as well, converting 64.3 percent of her attempts from the field.
  • Makiah Shaw leads the team in field goals attempted and is tops amongst the trio in minutes per game at 27.3. She's second on the team in points per game and third in rebounding thus far. Mahoney, a sophomore, ranks third on the squad in scoring and is tied with Williams in blocks per game with one per contest.
  • Starters Brenna Ortwein and Sophie Elstone are first and second in minutes per game, respectively. Both have made an impact on the defensive end, as they're tied for the team lead in steals. Ortwein's second on the team in rebounds per game with 4.8 and Elstone notched two blocks last weekend against Holy Family, one of which was on a closeout to the three-point line.
  • Marin Miller is the final member of the Millersville starting five and is coming off of a season in which she led the 'Ville in three-pointers made and was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team.
  • Guard Jabria Ingram has been the first guard off the bench for Kira Mowen so far this season. She's shown poise and and patience as the ballhandler in the pick and roll this season, ranking second on the team in assists.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS

  • The Vulcans enter the game with a 4-1 record, having won their first four contests before falling on Nov. 27 to Bowie St. They were selected as the #10 team in the nation according to the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches' Poll. The Vulcans are averaging 69.8 points per game while allowing just 59 thus far.
  • Freshman guard Nina Shaw has burst onto the scene for Cal U this season, averaging 36 minutes per game while pacing the team in assists and steals per game with 5.0 and 2.6, respectively. Her 36 minutes per contest are tops on the squad by nearly 10, as Jordan Smith ranks second at 26.4.
  • The Vulcan's scoring comes mainly from three players: Sierra Bermudez, Iyahnna Williams and Allycia Harris. All three are averaging in double figures. Bermudez has recorded 20 points or more in two contests thus far while Williams has reached double digits in four of five games, the only exception being a nine-point outing in just 22 minutes against Davis & Elkins. Harris paces the Vulcans in rebounds per game with 7.8 and has recorded two double-doubles thus far.

SCOUTING THE ROCK

  • Slippery Rock has only played two official games this season, both 15+ point losses. In two other exhibitions, The Rock dropped both by more than 35 points. In the two games, they sport a scoring margin of -20.5. The main issue has been the defense, as opponents are shooting a hair under 50 percent from the field.
  • The Rock's scoring will come mainly from freshman guard Regan Atkins and redshirt junior guard Kristina Donza. Atkins is tops on the team in minutes (35.0), points (16.0) and rebounds (5.0) per contest in her first season. She's been attacking at all three levels, with nine of her 24 shot attempts coming from beyond the arc. Atkins has knocked down 54.2 percent of her attempts from the field thus far as well.
  • Donza has been a similar threat from outside, as nearly half of her shots have come from three-point territory. That's for good reason, as she's shooting 38.5 percent on such attempts, leading to a mark of 13.5 points per game.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Cal U has the edge over the ‘Ville in the all-time matchup, as the Marauders have an 11-27 record in such contests. This includes dropping the last seven of nine to the Vulcans. Millersville has fared better at home, going 5-9 against its cross-state foes during the regular season. They have responded to the challenge while Cal U has been ranked in the top 25, however, winning three of the last four meetings dating back to 2010.
  • Millersville's all-time record against Slippery Rock sits at 15-11 after winning in overtime on Jan. 26, 2022. The Marauders have held the clear advantage in this matchup over the past 20 years, sporting a record of 12-4 in that span. That includes a stretch in which they won 11 of 12 contests between 2003 and 2014.
