MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - One day after defeating West Chester and claiming their fifth Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference (PSAC) title the Marauders were selected as the No.3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and were granted a second round home game against the No. 6 seed, Gannon. The match will be at Pucillo Field in Millersville, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m.
This is not an unfamiliar match up for either of these programs, as both teams faced off in this exact round of the NCAA Tournament back in 2021. After defeating Gannon in the 2021 PSAC Final, Millersville was seeded No. 4 in the tournament and hosted Gannon just six days after their last competition. The Marauders went on to defeat the Knights 4-3 in a penalty kick shoot out and move on to face Franklin and Pierce in the third round of play.
The Marauders have qualified for the NCAA Tournament under head coach
Steve Widdowson nine times since he took over the program in 2007. Millersville made their farthest run in 2011, when they hosted Mercyhurst and Bloomsburg in the first and second rounds and then played Fort Lewis in the semifinal round. 2011 was also the last time the Marauders hosted an NCAA Tournament game
Gannon will be making their 12th appearance in the NCAA tournament, with their last appearance coming in 2021. The Knights finished the regular season with 13-1-2 record, 9-0-1 in conference taking first place in the PSAC West. Tinashe Katsande leads the Knights' offense scoring 17 goals and creating 10 assists. James Pool following behind tallying 16 goals and five assists thus far. As a team Gannon has scored 69 goal this season while allowing just 17. Samuel Alarcon has played a majority of games in net for Gannon making 66 saves in 17 starts.
Millersville ended the regular season with a 14-2-3 record, 9-1-2 in conference winning the PSAC East. They have edged out opponents in nearly every offensive category scoring 38 goals while only allowing 15. They have held teams to under ten shots per game and have allowed just 0.79 goals per match. Travis Holiday have not allowed a goal since Oct. 21 when they defeated East Stroudsburg, 2-1.
The Marauders have won their last nine competitions, outscoring their opponents 22-2.
Bob Hennessey leads the 'Ville offense with 11 goals and five assists.
The winner of Millersville / Gannon advances to play the winner of Charleston / Queens. Queens defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, in the opening round of the tournament.
