BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Paced by top-10 finishes from Morgan Janiuk and Kaycee McCullough, the Millersville women's cross country team placed fourth in an 11-team field at a rain-soaked Bloomsburg Invitational Saturday.
It was the Marauders' first glimpse at a course that hosts the PSAC Championships in two weeks although the elements on Saturday made the run all the more challenging. The Marauders finished fourth among nine PSAC teams, and the gap between second place Bloomsburg and fourth-place Millersville was just eight points.
"We built some confidence and familiarity today," said Millersville head coach Andy Young. "We ran better as a team. We definitely will continue to progress."
Janiuk ran a season-best 6K time of 23:40.4 to finish in third place, running just behind Lock Haven's Elaina Klinger (22:10.5) and Bloomsburg's Kelley Selheimer (22:37.1). McCullough came within 14 seconds of her all-time personal best with a time of 23:59.5, placing ninth.
Millersville's top five was closely connected with freshman Bri Pollock posting a 24:28.1 for 17th place, Olivia Sunderland running a 24:41.2 for 22nd and Hannah Sweda placing 24th with a time of 24:59.4. Pollock cracked 25 minutes for the first time in her young career, while Sunderland shaved six seconds off her previous PR. Abby Bond (25:22.0) and Samantha Foster (25:22.2) crossed the finish line just two-tenths of a second apart for 29th and 30th places respectively. Bond's time was 16 seconds faster than her previous best. Millersville had 14 athletes compete in the race.
"It was a much better result today," said Young. "The team seems to be improving, and we got a lot closer to some conference foes."
