Gannon’s efficient offense tops Marauders on the road

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University women's basketball team earned an 86-57 win over the Marauders on Wednesday night in PSAC play. Millersville struggled against the Golden Knights defense which ranks first in the conference, holding opponents to an average of 54.4 points per game. Millersville was held to scoring six points in the first quarter. The Marauders drop to 9-7 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC while Gannon improves to 16-2 overall and 8-2 in the PSAC to maintain their No. 1 spot in the Western Division.  

Marin Miller helped keep Millersville floating with 16-points while shooting 66.7% from both the floor and behind the arc. Following with 11 points was Brenna Ortwein who went 4-for-4 on the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Taylor Langan led the Marauders in rebounds with seven on the night, five of which were defensive. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Ortwein put the Marauders on the board first after a scoreless two minutes of the opening period. Gannon's fast paced offense wasted no time in generating a 19-2 run in the first seven minutes. The Golden Knights' stifling defense forced eight Marauder turnovers in the first and held Millersville to shooting 27.2% from the floor.
  • The Marauders were able to outscore Gannon 19-16 to cut the large deficit to 18-points headed into halftime, shooting their best of 50% in field goals. The Golden Knights came out firing in the third making 10-of-15 from the floor and shooting 66.7% behind the arc to maintain their distant lead.
  • Gannon continued their fast-paced offense through the final quarter of regulation to secure the 29-point win over Millersville, outscoring Millersville 19-15. The Marauders ended the match-up shooting 20-for-49 in field goals and draining just three three-pointers throughout the game.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Bria Beverly made 3-of-9 from the floor and finished with eight points. Christa Ricks and Langan tallied seven points each.
  • The Marauders saw their best shooting of the night in the third quarter, going 7-for-14.
  • The Golden Knight held the edge in points off turnovers (34-16), bench points (23-13), points in the paint (44-20), and fast break points (7-5).  
  • Millersville out-rebounded Gannon 28-26, 16 of those rebounds were defensive.
