Marauders fall short of upset to No. 5 West Chester

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team fell short of an upset to No. 5 West Chester Saturday afternoon, 13-10. The Golden Rams never held more than a five-goal lead and the Marauders were able to cut that down to three in late-second half play, but ultimately failed to put together a comeback.

Gillian Zimmerman led the Marauder offense with five goals, including three in first-quarter play. The reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, Amanda Juliano followed her with three goals. Freshman netminder Morgan Scott continued her strong play today, recording nine saves off 22 Golden Ram shots on goal.

Millersville drops to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play following the loss, while West Chester improves to 4-0 overall, and 2-0 in PSAC East play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• First-quarter action featured the potent Golden Ram offense and number 17, Gillian Zimmerman. The Golden Rams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through two minutes of action, to which Zimmerman followed with two goals of her own within 40 second of each other. The Golden Rams would follow Zimmerman's score with a goal of their own five minutes later, making the score 3-2 with six minutes remaining in the quarter. Zimmerman wasn't done though, scoring another equalizer with three minutes remaining, her 18th goal of the season. The Marauders would then take their only lead of the game off an Amanda Juliano score, as West Chester would follow with two more goals to end the quarter.
• Juliano opened second-quarter action with her second score of the game, tying the contest, 2-2; however, WCU would then go on a 3-0 run, giving the No. 5 Golden Rams an 8-5 lead at halftime.
• The Marauders were outscored 3-2 in the third quarter, which led them to a four-goal deficit (11-7) heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Rachel Keeney and Zimmerman netted the two goals for 'Ville in the quarter.
• The two teams traded goals early in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 13-8 at the 10-minute mark. 'Ville then scored two to cut the lead to three, courtesy of Kristi Kada and Juliano. The Marauders scored their final goal of the game with just 2:53 remaining, making it too difficult to form a comeback.
