Marauders use balanced attack to hand Wilmington its first loss

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team came into Sunday's game against undefeated Wilmington leading the nation in scoring offense at 20.33 goals per contest, while also ranking top-10 in almost every team statistical category in the nation – the Marauders continued to show why Sunday afternoon, taking down the Wildcats 19-5, which is Wilmington's lowest scoring total this season. 'Ville has now scored 19 or more goals in every game this season and defeated all its opponents by 12 or more goals. The team's 4-0 start marks the program's first since the 2018 season when they started 5-0.
 
Millersville (4-0) was led by Grace Cobaugh, who scored a season-high six goals in the victory, Amanda Juliano and Gillian Zimmerman followed with four goals each in the win. Marycait Dorley, Rachel Keeney, Charlotte Lasak, Kristi Kada, and Liv Genovese all scored one goal. Wilmington (5-1) was led by Campbell Heller who scored three goals and ranks 10th in the nation in goals scored.

Millersville will look to continue its strong start against two familiar faces next week, as the Marauders travel to play No. 7 East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, March 16, before coming home to take on No. 5 West Chester on Saturday, March 19.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 • Juliano started the big offensive day for Millersville, sending a pass to Cobaugh just 1:30 into the first half for a score to give 'Ville a 1-0 lead. Juliano scored a goal of her own just under two minutes later off a free position attempt. The Marauders would go on to outscore Wilmington 5-1 for the remainder of first-quarter play to take a 7-1 lead going into the second.
• Second-quarter play started very similar to the first, with Cobaugh scoring just 30 seconds in to put 'Ville up seven. Juliano and Zimmerman followed with a goal each to stretch the lead to nine with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Millersville continued to apply offensive pressure and ended the half with a 13-2 lead.
• The slowest 15-minute offensive stretch for 'Ville came in the third quarter, as only Kristi Kada and Zimmerman scored goals. The Wildcats had saw their best offensive quarter come in the third, matching the two Marauder goals to make the score 15-4 going into the fourth.  
• The Marauders scored four fourth-quarter goals, while holding Wilmington to just one.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Cobaugh, and Juliano both recorded a team-high six points to lead Millersville on the offensive end of the field.  Both also fired seven shots on goal, which tied for the team high.
• Zimmerman led the Marauders with 10 total shots, including seven on frame.  
• Genovese and Dorley each recorded a team-high six ground balls in the win.
• Juliano and Lasak each sent out a team-high two assists.
• The Marauders out-shot the Wildcats 38-12, including 32-8 on goal.
• Millersville was 8-9 on clears, while Wilmington was 7-22. 
• 'Ville held the edge in ground balls, 30-17.

On the team's ability to control possession: "Our draw unit as well as our defense executed very well and gave our offense a lot of possessions throughout the game."
On the offensive play: "Our offensive unit continues to mesh and create opportunities for one another. We are reading openings and capitalizing on them very well."
 •On facing two nationally ranked teams next week: "We will face two very strong teams this week in our games against ESU and WCU. It will be important to focus on executing the small pieces all over the field to build into success as a unit."
