Erb finished in a tie for 19th
ERIE, Pa. – One of the toughest things to do in golf is sleep on a lead. Brady Erb had to do just that after he took the individual lead through two rounds at the NCAA East/Atlantic Super Regional. Erb's final rounded Saturday started brilliantly, but his bid for a NCAA Championship berth hit a snag on his seventh hole of the day, and he could not recover, finishing with an 11-over-par 83 and in a tie for 19th place. As a team, Millersville shot its highest score of the three-day tournament and finished 14th in the 16-team field.
Erb was the Marauders' top finisher, and he finished his career with 12 top-25 finishes in 29 events. He came within six shots of his lowest career 72-hole score. The Lake View Country Club course played tough all week and even more so on Saturday as the low round of 1-over-par 73 was shot by just two golfers in the field. Mercyhurst's Jack Angelucci and Tommy Ethier of Bentley shot matching scores of 74 to tie for medalist honors at 7-over-par. Etheir received the bid to nationals after a playoff. Gannon, St. Thomas Aquinas and Fayetteville State qualified as the top four teams. Fayetteville State edged Ethier's Bentley squad in a playoff for the fourth and final spot.
Erb, who opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 75, teed off on No. 10, and started with five-consecutive pars. Even after a bogey on No. 15, he held the lead. But a double on No. 16 and a bogey on No. 18 dropped him three shots behind Angelucci. The Laker, who teed off on No. 1, played a brilliant back nine with birdies on holes 16 and 17. His 1-under final nine put him in the clubhouse lead. Ethier, after 15 holes, was 3-over for the day, but he birdied 16 and 17 as well before slipping into a tie with Angelucci with a bogey on No. 18.
Erb was unable to rally on his final nine as he closed with a 43. It was just his third round over 80 this spring.
Millersville's best round of the day came from Bobby Lugiano, who zoomed six spots up the leader board with a 6-over-par 78, finishing at 22-over and in a tie for 40th. Ronnie Yanoski posted a 78 to finish tied for 59th. Christopher Knox finished in a tie for 75th after shooting an 83 Saturday, and Bailey Neveker shot an 88 to tie for 82nd.
Millersville's NCAA Super Regional appearance was its eighth in a row. Erb's finish was the best by a Marauder since Connor Sheehan placed third in 2017.
