MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville wrestling started its dual meet schedule Sunday with a convincing 41-3 win over visiting Shippensburg. The Marauders won six of the contested bout and scored bonus points in four.
Millersville (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) picked up its third consecutive win in the series with Shippensburg, but the 38-point margin of victory was Millersville's largest against Shippensburg since 1993-94. Shippensburg's record dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in PSAC action.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• It was the first dual meet action for seven of the 10 Millersville wrestlers. True freshman
Bryce Beatty set an aggressive tone in the opening 125-pound bout, piling up 18 points en route to an 18-2 technical fall in just 3:18. It was Beatty's first career tech fall.
• Redshirt freshman
Tim Uhler won a grinder at 133 pounds, knocking off DeAndre Reed, who was an NCAA qualifier in 2020 and ranked No. 3 in Super Region 1. Both wrestlers picked up escape points, but the difference was an illegal hold by Reed in the second period that awarded an additional point to Uhler.
•
Jonathan Parrilla (157),
Brandon Connor (165) and Bruce Vaughn (197) controlled their respective bouts as they all registered major decisions. It was the first major of the season for Parrilla while Connor improved to a team-best 12-4 and added his second major of the year. Vaughan recorded his second major decision of the season.
• The 285-pound match-up was a rematch of the 2018 PIAA Championship match between Millersville's
Bishop McCoy and Shippensburg's Danny Scheib. While Scheib won the high school meeting, McCoy took Sunday's match 3-1 in sudden victory. Escapes for both wrestlers made the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, but McCoy had nearly hit takedowns on two occasions late in the third. McCoy continued to press in the sudden victory round, and he dropped Scheib for the win.
REACTION FROM COACH KERRY REGNER
• On Beatty's match setting the tone: "He's one of our more aggressive, hard-nosed wrestlers. He comes from a good club with rich tradition. When he sets the tone like that, it's huge, like a firecracker."
• On Bishop's victory "That was a big one for me. Knowing he lost to the guy in the state finals a few years ago and to see him win in what I think was a pretty one-sided match eventhough it went to overtime. He fine-tuned some things, and it felt like he had points out there for a while."
• On starting the season with a 1-0 record: "We know who we are and who Ship is and at the end of the day we want to wrestle our best and wrestle to win. We won today, so I'm proud of them."
• On winning four matches with bonus points: "That was big. Were we going to go out there and try to win 4-3 or were we going to widen the gap. For the most part, everyone went out there and tried to score the entire match."
