LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Millersville football's Tyler Tate, Isaiah Onuschak and Steve Sweeney were named All-PSAC East by the conference's coaches Wednesday afternoon. Tate and Onuschak landed first team recognition and Sweeney was named to the second team.
Onushchak has now earned All-PSAC East honors in both of his seasons at Millersville, becoming the program's first two-time honoree since Sean Dugan in 2016-17. Onuschak was also a second team pick as freshman in 2019. Tate and Sweeney were honored for the first time in their careers. Tate and Onuschak give Millersville two first team selections for the first time since 2007. Tate is the first Marauder defensive lineman named to the first team since Kevin Kershner in 2007.
The trio of defenders played an integral role for a defense that ranked third in the PSAC against the pass, third in sacks and sixth in red zone defense. The unit posted its best total defense mark since 2005.
Onuschak, a redshirt sophomore, continued his play-making at linebacker, totaling 88 tackles, ranking 12th in the PSAC, while also recording 5 1/2 sacks and three passes broken up. Onsuchak turned in some of his best performances against the toughest competition. He tallied a career-high 16 tackles against Cal U, made four tackles for loss and two sacks against West Chester, and made 12 tackles and a sack against Shepherd.
Tate, a redshirt junior, turned himself into one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the region. As a defensive tackle, Tate recorded 11 sacks, becoming the first Marauder since 1999 to reach double figures. He ranked second in the PSAC in sacks and also ranked fourth in the conference in tackles for loss with 15 1/2. Consistent all season, he recorded at least a half-sack in eight games.
Sweeney, a redshirt junior safety, created a reputation for being a ball hawk and turning interceptions into big plays. He picked off three passes and totaled 89 return yards, a total that ranked fourth in the PSAC. In all, Sweeney defended nine passes while also forcing two fumbles and totaling 45 tackles.
The top award winners in the PSAC East included Shepherd's Tyson Bagent (offensive player of the year), West Chester's Jackson Taylor (defensive player of the year), Shepherd's Ryan Beach (rooke of the year), and Jim Clements of Kutztown (coach of the year). The PSAC West award winners included Cal U's Noah Mitchell (offensive player of the Year), Cal U's Jermal Martin Jr. (defensive player of the year), IUP's Tyrone Fowler (rookie of the year) and Mercyhurst's Marty Schaetzle (coach of the year).
All three of Millersville's All-PSAC East selections are expected to return in 2022. Millersville had one of the most youthful rosters in the PSAC in 2021 and graduates only four seniors from the team.
