MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - While the fourth annual Dining with Champions Scholarship Banquet and Auction was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, Millersville Athletics moves forward with its recognition of its best and brightest by announcing its annual award winners. The 2020 winner of the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award is track and field senior Madison Martin.
An accomplished performer with the PSAC's dominant throwers group and standout in the classroom, Martin posted a 3.96 cumulative GPA as a mathematics major with a concentration in actuarial science. She also served as a team representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
"I want to give a big thank you to the track team especially the coaches, and Coach [Brittany Hartman] and my teammates, especially the throwers," said Martin. "They've been there for me through the ups and the downs. I'm super tankful for them. I'd also like to give a big thank you to the math department. They've just given me so many opportunities to expand my horizons in the past for years and I wouldn't be where I am without them."
Martin piled up accolades for her performances in athletics and in the classroom and did so with remarkable consistency during her career. She scored points for the Marauders in all seven PSAC Championships in which she competed, cracking the top three for All-PSAC honors four times. She placed third in both the hammer and discus and took fourth in the shot put at the 2019 outdoor championships, and after placing third in the weight throw at the indoor championships in 2019, Martin finished as the PSAC runner-up in 2020. Additionally, she earned four USTFCCCCA All-Atlantic Region mentions and was named Google Cloud Academic All-District for her combined academic and athletic efforts in 2019.
"Madison became a consistent scorer at the PSAC championships both indoor and outdoor," said Millersville track and field head coach Andy Young. "Although she might have been slightly overshadowed by Sunflower Greene and Aliyah Striver, she is one of the all time great throwers in our history."
Martin ranks second all-time in the weight throw, and when she set her best of 56-6 1/2 in 2019, it was more than five feet further than any other athlete in program history not named Sunflower Greene. She also ranks third all-time in the discus and fourth in the hammer and ranks in the top 10 in both the indoor and outdoor shot put.
With Martin's individual contributions, the Marauders reached new heights as a program, posting back-to-back runner-up finishes at the 2018 and 2019 PSAC Outdoor Championships and posted two consecutive best-ever finishes at the indoor championships.
"She went from being very shy and quiet to being one our true leaders on the team," said Young. "She was willing to speak up and was willing to say things that needed to said even if that wasn't always comfortable."
A 3.96 GPA and an All-PSAC athletic career doesn't come easily for anyone. Young called Martin's work ethic second-to-none. Martin credited her peers and mentors with pushing her as a student and as an athlete.
"The most special thing about Millersville is all of the support I've received," said Martin. "I've had professors come to watch me throw. I've had teammates and coaches come to watch my thesis defense. I feel like I've been supported in so many ways."
"She became a team leader serving as SAAC representative as well as an example of what a student-athlete can achieve through her work in school and as a tutor in the math assistance center," said Young. "I think if you asked our athletes to point out someone who was the quintessential student-athlete many would point toward Madison."
