KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Just 14 days after beating the Kutztown Golden Bears 1-0, the No. 15 ranked Millersville women's soccer team maintained its perfect start to the season by beating them again 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Marauders have yet to concede a goal in 2019, outscoring opponents by a 21-0 margin.
Senior Kay Liebl scored for the third time this season, giving her 32 career goals. That number ties Becky Morris for the top spot on the Millersville all-time careers goals list.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• It was Liebl, in fact, who opened the scoring in the 15th minute. A long ball towards Kutztown's penalty box fell right to her feet, and she launched it near post from 18 yards out to put the Marauders on the board.
• Millersville kept up the offensive pressure and it paid off in the 32nd minute. Chandler Garcia dribbled in space towards Kutztown's goal and laid the ball off beautifully for Michelle Belcher. Belcher cut it back and left-footed the ball brilliantly into the top corner for goal number two of the game and her fourth tally of the season.
• The Marauders would strike off a set piece in the 70th minute for an insurance goal, when Cassie Blyth sent a corner kick directly to the head of Alexis Spencer. A Kutztown defender tried to clear it off the line but the ball had already fully crossed into the goal, giving Millersville the three goal lead.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
• On playing Kutztown for the second time this season: "Always difficult to play a team more than once. They've made some changes so we had to adjust things as well. We still prepared the same, however, we had to look back at game one and make our adjustments while considering theirs."
• On the team's effort in today's game: "We came out strong and took our chances well. At times we didn't deal well with certain things but overall it was a good performance with a positive result. Kutztown is a good team so you need to do that to have any success against them."
• On the great start to the season: "Very happy and proud of this group of players. We ask a lot of them and they've responded well. As always we need to stay grounded. We'll enjoy this result today and begin to focus on our next game tomorrow."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Kutztown outshot Millersville 9-8, but the Marauders sent more shots on goal (6-2). The Black and Gold also edged Kutztown in corner kicks 8-5.
• As noted above, Michelle Belcher's goal was her fourth of the season. That ties her for the team lead with Talia Grynkewicz.
• Alexis Spencer's goal was her first of the 2019 campaign. She scored three times in 2018.
• Chandler Garcia and Cassie Blyth's assists were both players' first of the season.
• Goalkeeper Reagan Kolinski only had to make two saves on the day, but she and the defense kept their sixth consecutive clean sheet.
NOTES
• The Marauders are now 11-18-4 all-time versus the Golden Bears. Head coach Matt Procopio improves to 3-3 all-time against KU.
• The team's 6-0 start continues to be a program record.
NEXT UP
• The Marauders finally return home to Pucillo Field this Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. to face West Chester University. It will be a battle of PSAC powerhouses as both teams are 6-0. Millersville defeated the Golden Rams 4-1 in 2018.
