MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - After a 4-2 loss in game one of Monday's doubleheader with East Stroudsburg, Millersville received five RBIs from
Jimmy Cain and five strong innings from
Daniel Ross in an 8-5 game two win.
Millersville won the season series by taking three of four from East Stroudsburg, improving its season record to 34-10 overall and 20-4 in the PSAC East. The Marauders will take a two-game lead over Bloomsburg into the final regular season series with Lock Haven.Â
GAME 1 RECAP (EAST STROUDSBURG 4, MILLERSVILLE 2)
• East Stroudsburg starter Joe Baran (4-1) stymied Millersville for 4 1/3 shutout innings, giving up just three. The Warriors scored one in the first on a Christian Rishel RBI single and held that lead until building on it in the sixth. With two outs and a runner on third, Millersville intentionally walked Rishel, and Zarley Cina followed with a three-run homer to right.Â
• Millersville scored one on a Jimmy Losh RBI ground out in the sixth, and added another on Kaylor Kulina's RBI double in the seventh, but could not mount an extended rally against reliever Chase Nowak, who earned his second save of the season.Â
• Millersville starter Cordell Shannon (8-2) suffered his first loss since his first start of the season. He gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings.Â
• Kulina reached base three times with a single, double and walk.Â
GAME 2 RECAP (MILLERSVILLE 8, EAST STROUDSBURG 5)
• After an 0-for-4 game one,
Cole Friese started game two with a bunt single, and that jump-started the Millersville offense. One batter later,
Jimmy Cain blasted a three-run homer to left. Millersville took advantage of an ESU error and added two more runs in the bottom of the first with RBIs on a
Jimmy Losh single and
Manning Brookens ground out.Â
• Cain added his fourth RBI in the second, plating Friese who started the inning with a double. In the sixth, Millersville added some insurance runs that would prove important. Cain's sacrifice fly brought home Christian Del Toro, and Ben Snyder singled home Friese, who scored for the third time in the game.Â
• The Marauders entered the seventh with an 8-2 lead, but ESU made it interesting. A walk and two doubles off of Tyler Yankosky put two runs on the board. An error followed by a sacrifice fly allowed third run to score. Aidan Welch, however, managed to limit the damage and end the inning with a fly out.Â
• Starter Daniel Ross gave up just one earned run (two total) on two hits while striking out five in five innings.Â
• Friese went 3-for-4 with three runs. Cain went 2-for-3 with a run and five RBIs.Â
WHAT COACH JON SHEHAN HAD TO SAY
• "Ben Snyder took the bull by the horns and chewed on the team in between games. I was going to but didn't need to because of his senior leadership. I was glad we came out and attacked early."
• "Ross' confidence has gone way up. It is interesting because the confidence is now matching the stuff. He has a good idea of what his capabilities are. He has done a great job."
• "Heading into the last series we have to focus one pitch at a time. Our biggest goal is to win a regional. Winning the PSAC East would be great, but the ultimate goal is play one pitch at a time."
NOTES
• Millersville can clinch its seventh PSAC East title since 2008 and first since 2016 with two wins over Lock Haven or two Bloomsburg losses to West Chester.Â
• Millersville is 7-6 when Friese does not score a run but 27-4 when he scores at least one.Â
• Ross matched a season-high with five innings pitched and five strikeouts for the second consecutive game.Â
• Cain has had five RBIs twice in the last 11 games.Â
UP NEXT
• Before Millersville closes the regular season on May 3-4, it travels to Wilmington for a non-conference nine-inning game on Tuesday, April 30.Â
