Women's lacrosse earns first win of the season; Wilson gets first win at Millersville

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville University women's lacrosse team never trailed in its 16-7 win over Wilmington on Wednesday evening on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. The victory marks the Marauders' first of the season and the program's first win under the guidance of head coach Cindy Wilson.

"It feels awesome to get my first win at Millersville," Wilson said. "It has been a good journey so far at Millersville and it feels great to get that first victory."

Millersville dominated every statistical category, outshooting the Wildcats 36-18, with 30 of its shots going on goal, turning the ball over just 14 times compared to Wilmington's 25 turnovers and going 16-for-19 on clears while the Wildcats went just 15-for-26.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Sarah Leverentz opened the scoring after intercepting a pass from Wilmington goalkeeper Maddie Hurm and taking advantage of an open goal less than four minutes into the game. Maddie Day scored the next goal more than five minutes later to tie the game.
Gillian Zimmerman scored the next two goals, with Sara Burney finding her from the left side on the second goal. Lashay Ross scored the following goal, the first of two in the game for her, to cut the Marauder lead to one.
• Millersville scored the next five goals, including one from Natalie Sukanick which was the first of her collegiate career. MaryCait Dorley collected the loose ball and passed it to Sukanick who scored in a one-on-one situation with Hurm. Ross' second goal of the game ended the Marauder run, but Millersville scored two more goals at the end of the half to go into halftime with a 10-3 lead.
Genevieve Speights scored Millersville's 11th goal less than 20 seconds into the second half, and Dorley extended the Marauder lead with her third goal of the game three minutes later.
• The Wildcats scored three of the next four goals to cut their deficit to seven, but Zimmerman's fourth goal of the game put an end to their run. At the 11:53 mark Calie Swegon sent a pass from behind the net to Leverentz who swiped the ball into the goal on the run, and Swegon then followed with an unassisted goal to give the Marauders a 16-6 lead, their largest of the day.

COACH CINDY WILSON QUOTES
• "We showed a lot of grit and hustle all over the field. We were connecting really well and saw a lot of pretty lacrosse on the field today."
• "Our offense is starting to come together and recognize each other's strengths in order to work off of each other. They're stepping into their roles and meshing as a unit. We saw a lot of team offense today and not just one person running the show. It was good to see the scoring spread out."
• "We talked a lot before the game about having strong body defense and working as a unit to have those slides and crashes. They executed that game plan very well and had good communication."
• "We also talked about supporting the ball and having connections all over the field. That showed in our transition today. We did a good job of getting the ball up the field and preventing them from getting the ball up the field."
• "We created a lot of opportunities on offense. We could have taken advantage of more of them, but that's something we can learn and grow from. There're some minor changes we can make to turn those shots on goal into goals."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Gillian Zimmerman scored a career and game-high four goals, while MaryCait Dorely also set a new career high with three goals and tallied one assist. Sarah Leverentz also notched a hat trick in the win. Sara Burney recorded career and game highs with six points and five assists.
• Leverentz collected a game-high five ground balls and fired off a game-high eights shots. Natalie Sukanick caused a game-high four turnovers and Genevieve Speights won a career-high eight draw controls, doubling her previous career high of four.
Shannon Davis made four stops in net.

NOTES
• This marks Millersville's four-straight win over the Wildcats.
Cindy Wilson joins Barbara Waltman as the only coaches in program history to win their second game at Millersville after losing their first.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders will play their first road game of the season when they travel to Chestnut Hill on Saturday, March 2 for a 1 p.m. match. Millersville is 2-0 all-time against the Griffins.
