Women's lacrosse cruises to 16-5 win over Shepherd

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville University women's lacrosse dominated Shepherd on Tuesday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, outshooting the Rams 39-19 and going 20-for-21 on clears, including a perfect 9-for-9 in the second half. Ten different Marauders notched a point in the win and eight Marauders scored at least one goal.

Millersville, playing its first game in 10 days, improves to 2-2, while Shepherd falls to 1-3.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Rams scored the first two goals of the game, but Calie Swegon got the Marauders on the board at the 17:41 mark when she spun in from the left side and scored her first of three goals in the game. Shepherd would not score back-to-back goals again and Millersville notched the next six goals to bring a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Sarah Leverentz tied the game, 2-2, at the 16:43 mark when Emily Jacobsen sent her a pass off a free position attempt that Leverentz fired into the back of the net.
• Lillian Funkee scored her 14th goal of the season just over 30 seconds into the second half to cut the Shepherd deficit to 6-3, but Erin Fagan responded 16 seconds later with her own goal. That began a run of five-straight goals for Millersville, three from Gillian Zimmerman, which put the game away.
• The Rams showed some life with a goal at the 19:37 mark to make it an 11-4 game, but the Marauders scored five of the last six goals to dash any hopes of a comeback.

COACH CINDY WILSON QUOTES
• "We did a lot of really good things today. It was a good team win. We worked together, were created and saw a lot of our strengths on display."
• "We've been working hard on playing tough one-on-one defense and having good slides. Our communication and all-around team defense was really strong today. We did a great job of causing turnovers and getting the ball up and out."
• "We started to come into our own offensively today and worked well together. We saw a lot of different options and a lot of different people stepped up and tried some new things. We saw people stepping into new roles and doing well in those roles. We want to have a balanced attack and have a lot of different people contribute."
• "We were working for each other well and were working to get open on our clears. Supporting the ball in transition was key to give ourselves options to get the ball up the field."
• "Things have been a little tricky with the weather, so we were really excited to get out and play today. A good win like this builds confidence going into PSAC play. PSAC play is always tough, but having some confidence and a foundation to fall back on will be big for us."
