Women's soccer stays perfect, Liebl makes history after 6-2 win over Mansfield
10/2/2019 10:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Senior Kay Liebl's strike in the 88th minute was her 33rd career goal, passing Becky Morris for most goals scored all-time by any player in the history of Millersville women's soccer.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• It didn't take long for the Marauders to light up the scoreboard. In the 8th minute Kylie Sullivan blazed down the right wing and fired a low hard cross into the box. It rolled past the Mansfield defenders and found the foot of Morgan Winchock, who blasted it home to open the scoring.
• Millersville would add a second goal in the 22nd minute, when Michelle Belcher charged hard towards the Mansfield penalty box. Dribbling past a couple defenders, she tucked the ball away in the left corner of the net to make it a 2-0 game.
• Senior Amanda McElhare entered the game in the 39th minute and made an immediate impact. Alexis Glode slotted the ball ahead to her and forced the goalie to come out. McElhare chipped the ball beautifully over the goalie and it just barely snuck inside the left post for a three goal lead.
• McElhare kept up the momentum in the second half. She found herself at the top of the box in the 48th minute with no Mountaineers around, and smashed the ball with authority into the bottom left corner of the net for the Marauders' fourth goal of the game.
• The Mountaineers' offense came alive in the second half as well. Mansfield scored in both the 60th and 72nd minutes, the first coming when Koryn Reinhart launched a superb strike into the top right corner. The second was scored in the air by Eleni Gebbia and brought the Mountaineers within 2 goals.
• Substitutions were made by the Marauders and the pressure was ratcheted back up. Mackenzie Stallone found Morgan Winchock with a ball that allowed Winchock to wind up and get full force behind the shot, beating the keeper to give Millersville a three goal cushion once again, 5-2.
• As time was running out in the game, it was Kay Liebl's time to make history. Kylie Sullivan once again created space down the right side and crossed for Liebl, who scored for the 33rd career time while wearing the Black and Gold to secure the 6-2 victory.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH MATT PROCOPIO
• On Liebl setting the career goals mark: "It's largely been her. She's one of the hardest working kids in every single session. She puts in the time, she puts in the effort and she reaps the benefits of her hard work. I'm extremely proud of her for that. Very happy for her. It's a great moment for her and a great moment for the program."
• On conceding the two second half goals from set pieces: "I think we were good in the first half, but the two moments on corner kicks were kind of unacceptable for us. Corner kick goals or restart goals, those are goals that are preventable. We shouldn't concede like that. We just need to be better in those moments. It kind of let them back into the game."
• On the value of many different players getting playing time in the game: "It's always good to get other players experience. It's just a matter of them growing and learning from things as they get minutes. They have to make the most of the minutes that they get, and it was a good opportunity today for them to learn and get first-hand experience."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville out-shot Mansfield 34-3 in the game. 18 of the Marauder shots were on goal and the team held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
• Michelle Belcher's goal extends her team-leading total to six for the season.
• Morgan Winchock's brace gives her three total goals on the season, while Amanda McElhare's two goals were the first she has scored in 2019.
• Alexis Glode and Mackenzie Stallone's assists were the two players' first of the season. Freshman Kylie Sullivan's two assists were the first two of her collegiate career.
NOTES
• The Marauders are now 13-6-4 all-time versus Mansfield, including four straight wins.
• Amanda McElhare's two goals in the game doubles her season total from 2018.
• The team's record-setting eight game win streak has also set the record for longest consecutive win streak to begin a season.
