Lancaster, Pa. – The Millersville women's cross country team participated in the Alumni Run hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday morning to kick off the 2018 season.
Freshman Jillian Miller won the women's race with an 18:21.00 finish to place 16th, while fellow freshman Natalie Poulton was the second Marauders harrier to cross the finish line with a 19:19.00 mark to finish 18th.
"Jillian Miller ran an outstanding race for her collegiate debut," Young said. "The course was a little bit shorter than a 5k. But she still ran a really good race, which was exciting. Our second finisher was also a freshman, Natalie Poulton. It was good to see her run a strong race."
Sophomore Yoangelys Rijo-Cedeno and junior Emily Bland placed just behind Poulton, finishing with times of 19:28.00 (19th place) and 19:32.00 (20th place), respectively.
"We had a whole bunch of groups of athletes come in together," Young said. "Yoangelys and Emily came in together, and it was nice to see those groupings today."
Sophomores Victoria Ranck and Natalie Pietrowski also finished in the top 30 with marks of 20:26.00 (26th place) and 20:47.00 (29th place), respectively.
Senior Millie Davis finished with a time of 21:43.00 and placed 38th in her last Alumni Run as a member of the team. Redshirt sophomore Devon Matz finished in 40th place with a mark of 22:10.00 and junior Kelley Taylor placed just behind her in 41st with a time of 22:25.00.
Junior Brianna Laliberte (23:21.00, 45th place), sophomore Sydney Levin (23:24.00, 46th place), freshman Brianna Brennan (23:55.00, 47th place), junior Gemma Pasewicz (24:28.00, 48th place) and sophomore Bridget Dugan (28:01.00, 49th place) rounded out the remaining Marauders runners.
"We wanted to see where we were after our summer training," Young said. "We wanted to get a better idea on a real cross country course of where their training put them as of right now."
Franklin & Marshall alum Michael Whalen won the race by a 32-second margin with a mark of 15:54.00. Millersville alum Chris Brandt '14 finished behind Whalen with a time of 16:26. Sheena Crawley '13 was the top women's Millersville alum, placing 27th with a mark of 20:32.00.
"This gives us a good indication of where we are so we can be more specific with our training and the workouts that we do," Young said. "We want to build off of what we did today and get stronger so we're ready when we hit the big meets like PSACs and regionals."
The Marauders will next travel to Newville, Pa. to participate in the Dickinson Long Short on Sept. 22 at 10:30 a.m.
