Millersville, Pa. - Millersville University head football coach J.C. Morgan has announced the appointment of Matt Sutjak as the team's defensive coordinator and has named Jeff Tomasetti as offensive coordinator.
Sutjak (Millersville '10) and Tomasetti (Shippensburg '13) add familiarity to Morgan's staff. Both played their collegiate football careers in the PSAC and have spent the last five seasons successfully coaching in the league. Sutjak has served the last two as Millersville's defensive coordinator. He also guided the program as the interim head coach during the 2018 spring practices. Tomasetti takes the reigns of the offense after playing under Morgan as a quarterback at Shippensburg and also working alongside him on the coaching staff since 2013.
"It means a lot to me that Matt will remain at Millersville as defensive coordinator," said Morgan. "When I arrived here, I had the chance to thoroughly examine our defense from the last couple years. I was able to see the improvements that have been made, and I am excited about Coach Sutjak's plan moving forward. Also, Matt did a fine job holding things down during the transition. He bleeds Black and Gold. As an alum, he's family."
With Sutjak coordinating the defense, Millersville made significant strides. After ranking no higher than 14th in the PSAC in scoring defense for eight consecutive seasons, Millersville improved to 10th in Sutjak's first season and jumped to ninth in 2017. Sutjak also coached the defense to a No. 6 total defense ranking--the program's best ranking in more than 18 years. In 2017, Sutjak developed three All-PSAC East selections--the most for the unit since 2007. Cameron Boykin and Tommy Halloway were Millersville's first underclassmen named All-PSAC East since 2007.
Tomasetti, a native of Claymont, Del., has quickly climbed the coaching ranks and is now the youngest offensive coordinator in the PSAC.
"I'm excited to be able to have Jeff join me at Millersville," said Morgan. "He worked closely alongside me the last three years and was a major part of our success at Shippensburg. He has a tremendous football mind and is a rising star in this profession. More important, he's a great person who will do a great job serving our student-athletes off the field."
Tomasetti started his coaching career as the Raiders' wide receiver coach and was elevated to quarterbacks and wide receivers coach in 2015. In that short time, Tomasetti developed three All-PSAC East wide receivers and a record-setting quarterback, who posted a 23-6 overall record as the starter. Two of his athletes, Trevor Harman and Sheldon Mayer, rank first and second all-time at Shippensburg in catches. As a player, Tomasetti served as a team captain for the Raiders in 2012. He was also named the SU Special Teams Player of the Year and two-time recipient of the Red Raider Pride Award for his leadership and commitment to excellence.
Millersville's 2018 season opens on Thursday, Aug. 30 at home against Pace.
