Ville's defense stifles Shippensburg

Millersville, Pa. -- The Marauders returned to their season form with a 13-4 win at home over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg University, Tuesday afternoon.
Millersville enjoyed its home-field advantage, after its humbling loss to No. 18 IUP over the weekend. Despite chilly temperatures and rain that came down harder as the game progressed, the Marauders played concise in every level of the field.
The defense, motivated after giving up 22 goals in its last game, ground the Shippensburg offense down. The Raiders only mustered seven shots and one goal in the first half as senior captain Morgan Masiejczyk's defense suppressed cutters in the crease and closed off passing lanes. The defense stayed aggressive in the second half and used double teams to force errant passes from Shippensburg's attackers. Two of Shippensburg's three goals in the second half came in garbage time.
Junior goalie, Bryana Weston-Wyatt shutdown the Raiders' attempts on goal with eight saves. Weston-Wyatt was steadfast against Shippensburg's free-position attempts and only allowed one goal on four attempts.
Junior Natalie Sukanick and sophomore Jasa Lorah were crucial in limiting Shippensburg's opportunities on offense. Sukanick led the team with four caused turnovers and five groundballs. Lorah led the team with five draw controls.
While the defense nullified Shippensburg's offense, Millersville's own offense dominated possession and took advantage of every second on the shot clock. The offense was kick-started from the draw control. Millersville won 14 of 19 draw controls as the aforementioned Lorah won five, and junior Erin Fagan and freshman Genevieve Speights each snagged four.
Seniors Sabrina Fusco and Callie Kavanaugh led the Marauders again in scoring with a hat trick each. Kavanaugh also assisted two goals to take her point total to five which was the game-high.
Millersville improved to 7-3 and 3-3 in the PSAC with its win over Shippensburg. The Marauders moved up one spot to seventh in the conference standings, and they sit one spot behind the final playoff seed. Millersville will look to improve its conference record again when it hosts Slippery Rock Friday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
