Box Score 2 Lock Haven, Pa. - If Millersville's offense was in a slump, it isn't any longer. The Marauders scored a road sweep of Lock Haven Friday, totaling 20 runs and 27 hits in the doubleheader. Millersville held off a rallying Bald Eagles squad in game one for a 7-6 win, and then received four hits from
Cole Friese in a 13-1 game two win.
Prior to the game two outburst, Millersville had not scored more than seven runs in a game since March 4--a span of 27 games. Millersville's 16 hits in game two were also a season high. The wins pushed Millersville to 27-14 overall and 15-7 in the PSAC East--evening them in the win column with division-leading Bloomsburg, which sat idle on Friday. The wins also helped Millersville's NCAA Atlantic Regional resume as Lock Haven entered the weekend ranked No. 8.
Friese went 2 for 3 with a double, steal, walk, RBI and two runs scored in game one, and followed that with his first career four-hit game. He produced three singles and a triple and scored all four times he reached base. The day was quite the slump-buster for Friese, who had totaled just five hits in his previous 11 games.
Kaylor Kulina went 3 for 4 with two runs scored in both games.
Bobby Dorta scored a save in game one and then went 3 for 5 with a RBI in game two.
GAME 1
Millersville starter
Eli Nabholz rolled into Friday with three consecutive complete game shutouts, and Millersville jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a top of the third in which
Dominic Hardaway hit a two-run home run. Nabholz, however, ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning.
The back-to-back PSAC East Pitcher of the Week escaped a bases loaded jam in the second but took damage in the third. Lock Haven totaled three hits (including a Kolby Dehaas solo homer) and took advantage of a walk to cut Millersville's lead to 5-4. Millersville extended the lead back to three in the fourth with a RBI double from
Ben Snyder and a sacrifice fly from
Jimmy Cain, but Lock Haven would not go away. In the bottom of the inning, the Bald Eagles chased Nabholz out of the game after starting the inning with three consecutive singles. Reliever
Christian Wingard scored the second out of the inning before giving up a two-run single, but he managed to strand the tying run on first base with a fly out to left.
Holding on to a 7-6 lead, Millersville handed the ball to Dorta, and he retired the side in order for his first career save.
Kulina's three hits led the Marauders' charge. Friese, Snyder and Trainer had two hits apiece. Despite giving up six runs on 10 hits, Nabholz (7-3) earned the win in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
GAME 2
Friese and Kulina were the spark plugs for Millersville again in game two. Friese's single and Kulina's double led off the first, and an error on a
Jimmy Cain ground ball opened the door to a five-run first inning. Kulina, Hardaway, Dorta and
Eric Callahan all drove in runs in the inning.
The Marauders scored another run in the fourth, five in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The sixth inning featured five hits including a RBI triple from Friese and a double from Snyder. Cain drove in both runs in the seventh with a double.
Cordell Shannon (6-2) did not allow an earned run in six innings of work. He scattered five hits, walked two and struck out two. Lock Haven's only run came in the first inning, and the runner reached on an error.
Five of Millersville's 16 hits were for extra bases. Friese went 4 for 5. Kulina reached base four times with three hits and a hit by pitch. Dorta's three hits marked a career high.
