GAME OVERVIEW
• For the second time in a month, the third and fourth team in the PSAC East meet on the hardwood. This time around, Kutztown and Millersville have clinched playoff spots, but do not expect that to have a chilling effect on the game's intensity. A resurgent Bloomsburg sits in fifth place with an opportunity to steal home playoff hosting rights from the loser of this game as the regular season comes to a close in ten days. Of course, there is also the matter of settling the score from the first match up between Kutztown and Millersville during the 2017-18 season.
• The Golden Bears were mauled by the Marauders by a score of 85-58 at Pucillo Gymnasium on Jan. 13. Kutztown has the opportunity to earn some revenge and secure its third place position in the standings when they host Millersville. If they can steal a win in Keystone Arena, Millersville has the opportunity to move into third and sweep the regular season series with Kutztown for the first time since 2015-16.
• Last time out, Millersville lit it up from the field as they shot 53 percent including 44 percent from downtown. An offensive explosion in the second and third quarters by Millersville put the game out of reach as the Marauders outscored the Golden Bears 26-15 and 23-11 in those quarters. Senior
Alayah Hall led all scorers with 24 points on 9-10 shooting. Redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger, sophomore
Courtney Dimoff, and junior
Jade Farquhar all scored in double digits as they combined for 35 points on 13-27 shooting.
• Kutztown was vulnerable on the boards and Millersville took advantage by out-rebounding Kutztown 46-31. That discrepancy allowed the Marauders to outscore the Golden Bears 38-18 in the paint. Turnovers provided another advantage for the Marauders as they forced Kutztown into 20 turnovers and scored 23 points off those turnovers. Millersville has the opportunity to earn the upset at Kutztown if they can frustrate the Golden Bears in those categories.
• As senior day rapidly approaches on Feb. 17 against Lock Haven, the
Alayah Hall appreciation tour is in full swing. As the lone senior for Millersville, Hall has led on the court with 385 points scored so far this season and helped the Marauders to its second highest win total since she stepped on campus in 2014. Â
• Hall currently sits at 962 career points with three games to reach 1,000 points. Hall would be only the 22nd player in the program's history that dates back as early as 1918. Hall would be the first Marauder to reach 1,000 points since
Carly Gallagher reached the mark in Dec. 2014.Â
• At 16.7 points per game, Hall is tied for the third highest scoring average since Deb Mohler's 17.6 ppg in the 1995-96 season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
• Leading up to their second match up with the Marauders, the Golden Bears' situation is still the same with only the numbers changing. Kutztown sits in the third spot in the PSAC East while Millersville sits one game behind Kutztown in the fourth position. What has changed is the event venue which has a significant impact. Kutztown has an 11-2 record at home with its only losses to the PSAC West grinders Seton Hill (18-7, 13-6 PSAC) and PSAC East leading West Chester (19-4, 16-3 PSAC). Amping up the daunting nature of stealing a win in Keystone Arena is Millersville's current 3-7 record away from Pucillo Gymnasium. Head Coach
Mary Fleig will look to her returning players, who stole a 51-49 playoff win at Kutztown last season, to lead the way.
• Kutztown is averaging 66.5 points per game this season, but, at Keystone Arena, the Golden Bears average 75.4 points per game. Helping its scoring efforts, Kutztown thrives on the long ball as they rank third in the conference with 170 made three pointers. Millersville will need to break from its season-long trend of three point defending as they currently rank 15th in the PSAC at defending the three point shot.
• Freshman sensation Rylee Derr currently ranks in the PSAC's top-25 scorers with 13.2 points per game. Derr takes it to another level at home as she averages 14.8 points per game in Keystone Arena. Derr is a problem when she gets hot from long range, the guard has scored 65 three-pointers this season which is 38 more threes than any Marauder has made. Derr already holds the school record for most threes made in a game with seven. Millersville's guards must close out Derr's shots to disrupt her rhythm.
• Freshman Zoe Zerman presents another potential problem for the Millersville defense. On Feb. 12, two days before tip off between Millersville and Kutztown, Zerman scored 36 points in 28 minutes on 12-16 shooting and 6-7 from the three point line. The Marauders have fallen victim to huge individual scoring efforts multiple times this season, and they cannot allow Zerman to score at that same level.
