Doylestown, Pa. – The Millersville University wrestling team won its season opener 21-14 against Delaware Valley Saturday afternoon.
Six Marauders scored victories including wins in collegiate debuts from freshmen
Rob Saum (174) and
Reece Muldoon (174). Millersville won despite wrestling without projected starters
Shane Ruhnke (165) and
Evan Morrill (184).
BOUT HIGHLIGHTS
• Redshirt senior
Connor Sheehan opened the dual with an 11-7 decision in the 125-pound weight class. Sheehan had a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period and kept the momentum going to clinch the win.
• The Aggies battled back at the 133- and 141-pound weight classes with a decision and technical fall wins to take an 8-3 advantage. Redshirt senior 149-pound
D.J. Mele won his close bout, 8-5. At the end of the second period, Mele got an escape to lead 5-4 and then finished the bout with two takedowns at the end of the third.
• Saum scored a 13-5 major decision victory in his first collegiate bout. Saum and Chris Richardson were tied at 3-3 with both earning escapes in the last part of the second period. Saum scored five near-fall points in the third to extend his lead to 8-3.
• Muldoon and his opponent ended the third period with a 5-5 score. Muldoon started the overtime period with a takedown to clinch the 7-5 victory. That win helped the Marauders jump in front in the team score, 13-11.
• The Aggies won the 184-pound match. After the Delaway Valley's win, senior 197-pound
Colton Dull claimed a 16-1 technical fall. That win put the Marauders up 18-14 with one more bout to go. At 285, redshirt senior
David Wuestner sealed Millersville's win with a 6-3 triumph.
