Cold shooting late dooms the Marauders at Mansfield

Mansfield, Pa. -- Following a converted lay up by freshman Catherine Copeland, the Marauders were denied another made field goal during the final 4:32 as Mansfield topped Millersville 60-54. Senior Alayah Hall lead all scorers with 21 points.

The Marauders lead by as much as 11 in the third quarter, but Mansfield hit multiple three-pointers to close out the quarter and cut Millersville's lead to only three. Finally, two-and-a-half minutes into the final quarter, Mansfield tied the game at 50-50 and finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to win the game. The Marauders had opportunities from the field and in the paint in the final four-and-a-half minutes but their shots would not fall.

Both teams struggled early to score as Millersville lead 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. However, the buckets began to fall in the second quarter with both teams scoring in double figures in the quarter, and Millersville entered the locker room for halftime leading 29-25. Despite the increase in made field goals, neither team shot better than 37 percent in the first half.

Shooting percentage was the difference maker as Millersville played its second game in a row away from Pucillo Gymnasium. While the Marauders outscored the Mountaineers in the paint, off turnovers, off second chances, and off fast breaks, the Mountaineers were more successful overall from the field and especially from the three-point arch. The Marauders will look to have a short-term memory and get back to their shooting season average in their next game.

Continuing her strong play against conference opponents, Hall scored in double figures for the ninth straight conference game. Currently, she averages 15.7 points per game overall, but against conference opponents, she averages 18.4 points per game. The guard played an efficient 39 minutes as she converted 50 percent of her field goals. The game against Mansfield marked the fourth straight game that Hall has scored 15 points or more.

Junior Jade Farquhar followed up her career-night at Shippensburg with another double-digit scoring performance against the Mountaineers. Farquhar scored 13 points on 4-7 shooting while also shooting perfect from the free throw line. The guard was all over the floor and paired her scoring with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Millersville returns to Pucillo Gymnasium to host PSAC East rival Bloomsburg on Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
