GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville and Mansfield play each other for the second time this season with the Marauders benefiting from home cooking this time around. The Mountaineers played host to the Marauders Jan. 8 and sent Millersville home with a 54-60 loss. On a night where both teams struggled to get the buckets to fall, the Mountaineers gained the slight edge and took advantage of Millersville shooting ice cold late in the contest. The Marauders finished the final four-and-a-half minutes without a made field goal or free throw attempt.
• Both Millersville and Mansfield have followed similar trajectories and both sport 4-4 records in January. While the Mountaineers hold the edge head-to-head, the Marauders sit one game ahead of the Mountaineers in the PSAC East standings. Millersville's 6-8 conference record ranks fourth in the division while Mansfield's 5-9 record ranks fifth. This iteration of the Millersville and Mansfield rivalry is potentially critical as the regular season nears its conclusion. Millersville sits one game behind Kutztown in the PSAC East despite holding the head-to-head record, and the Marauders need a win against Mansfield to keep pace with Kutztown. A Mansfield win guarantees the Mountaineers jump the Marauders into the fourth spot for at least the weekend.
• Millersville's poor shooting at Mansfield has been an outlier. Excluding the game against Mansfield and Millersville's recent contest at Gannon, Millersville has shot 44 percent or better from the field in eight out of ten games dating back to Dec. 19. In fact, the Marauders' 44 percent effort was in their most recent game versus East Stroudsburg. The Warriors descended upon Pucillo Gymnasium featuring the second best record in the PSAC East and the second-highest scoring player in the entire conference. After 40 minutes on the court, the Marauders earned a 69-48 victory over the Warriors. East Stroudsburg headed home after being held to their second-lowest scoring effort of the season. Only Division I Villanova University, in an exhibition contest during the preseason, held East Stroudsburg to a lower point total. Millersville's aggressive defense held Imani Brown, who averaged 20.3 points per game, to only 10 points while no other Warrior reached double figures.
• Freshman
Lauren Lister enjoyed another flash of brilliance in her fledgling collegiate career. The guard topped her previous career-high of 21 points against Shepherd with a 23 point effort against East Stroudsburg. Lister shot 9-16 from the floor as she sliced through the Warriors' defense and laid up high percentage shots. In only her second career start, Lister matched her career-highs in rebounds and assists in addition to her scoring.
• Redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger shook off a two-game streak of single digit scoring with a 15 point effort on 75 percent shooting. Bamberger's ability to score in the paint has been critical for the Marauders in recent weeks. Millersville is 3-1 this month when the forward breaches double-digit scoring. Bamberger's seven rebounds against Warriors tied for second on the team along with Lister.
• Finishing first in rebounding for Millersville was sophomore
Courtney Dimoff who snagged 11 rebounds on her way to her first career double double. After snagging five rebounds in the opening four minutes, it was only a matter of time until Dimoff reached double-digit rebounds and paired them with 10 points.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
• Mansfield ranks in the middle of the pack offensively, but the defense has frustrated opponents into averaging only 38 percent shooting from the field which ranks sixth in the conference. The Mountaineers are enforcers in the paint as they rank in the top-10 in conference in both rebounding and blocked shots. In the last contest, the Mountaineers held the Marauders to 31 percent shooting while out-rebounding Millersville 47-38. Mansfield provides a difficult match up defensively for Millersville as the Mountaineers' two leading scorers are both forwards which disrupts Millersville's tendency to play guard heavy line ups.
• The Marauders are familiar with Mansfield's leading scorer Brielle Kelly. The senior lead the Mountaineers with 16 points in the last contest. Over the season, Kelly has been a force in the conference, and she ranks fourth in scoring with 19.7 points per game. Kelly has scored in double figures in 20 straight games this season, and she scored 20 or more points in seven games and 30 or more points in three games. The forward is the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week after scoring 17 against Shippensburg, 30 against Bloomsburg and 26 against Cheyney in the past week.
• Backing up Kelly on the offensive end is senior forward Alyssa Mullins. Mullins scored 15 points and snagged 10 rebounds against the Marauders which marked her fourth double double of the season. Mullins has quieted down slightly as she has only scored in double figures in two games and has not snagged double digit rebounds since the match up against the Marauders. However, measuring six feet tall, Mullins always provides a match up problem for a smaller Millersville line up, and she has the potential to be a game breaker for the Mountaineers.
