GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville righted the ship this past Wednesday with their 77-65 victory over PSAC East rival Bloomsburg. Their victory over the Huskies allowed the Marauders to keep pace with Kutztown for the final playoff hosting spot in the PSAC East. Millersville shot efficiently as they turned in a performance featuring half of their field goals and three pointers going through the hoop. Millersville's shooting was aided by crisp passing. The guards were able to find the open shot which lead to 18 assists on the 27 made field goals.
• With only roughly 54 miles separating the universities, the rivalry with Kutztown is all too familiar for the Millersville faithful. Even more familiar is the coaching match up between Millersville Head Coach
Mary Fleig and Kutztown Head Coach Janet Malouf. This will be the 52nd meeting between the two coaches with Coach Fleig sporting 38 wins to only 13 losses.Â
• Adding to the intrigue of this match up, this is the first match up between the Golden Bears and the Marauders since sixth-seeded Millersville's upset of the third-seeded Golden Bears in Kutztown during the 2016-17 PSAC Playoffs. Trailing by six entering the fourth quarter, Millersville turned in a 25 point fourth quarter performance to complete the comeback and top the Golden Bears 69-65.
•Senior
Alayah Hall has been the driving force for Millersville's offense. The guard has scored in double-figures in 13 of 14 games this season, and she has scored in double-figures in 12 straight games. In the last seven games, Hall has scored 19 or more points five times. Hall has familiarity with the Golden Bears and will look to replicate her playoff performance from last season. In that game, she took over and turned in a career-high-tying 29 point performance on 67 percent shooting.
• Another current Marauder coming off a strong playoff performance against Kutztown is redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger. The forward registered her first career double-double in the playoff game with 11 points and 11 rebounds. This season, Bamberger ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game while averaging 7.7 rebounds per game.
• A pivotal match up on the court this time around will come down to guard play. Kutztown's two highest-scoring players are guards who both measure 5-foot-10. Look for Millersville's longer starting guards junior
Jade Farquhar (5-foot-9) and sophomore
Courtney Dimoff (5-foot-10) to disrupt with their own wingspans.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
• The Kutztown Golden Bears currently sport a 9-6 record and a 4-5 record in the conference. Kutztown owns the third spot in the PSAC East division, one spot ahead of the Marauders. The Golden Bears defend their den exceptionally well with an 8-1 record at Keystone Arena. However, Kutztown has been vulnerable away from home as they are 0-4 in away games. Of course, Kutztown's four away losses were against top PSAC opponents including nationally ranked No. 10 Edinboro and No. 15 Edinboro. Kutztown will be hungry to earn their first away game at Pucillo Gymnasium.
• While Kutztown ranks in the middle of the conference in scoring, they rank towards the top in offensive volume with 922 attempted field goals this season. The Golden Bears' aggressive defense feeds their offense as they rank third in the conference in steals with 11.5 steals per game. Kutztown likes to force their opponents into more turnovers and average 21.2 points per game off turnovers.
• The Golden Bears' offense is powered by a pair of impressive freshmen. Rylee Derr leads the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game as well as ranking tied for first with 24 steals. Alexis Smith ranks second behind Derr with 9.5 points per game. Smith is an effective sixth-woman coming off the bench to change up the offense for Kutztown. Playing tight defense on Smith without fouling will be paramount because Smith wants to get to the foul line as she has shot 85 percent from the charity stripe. Smith's best performance of the season was a 24 point effort in only 20 minutes against Penn State-Lehigh. That performance earned her PSAC Athlete of the Week honors on Nov. 27.
• Senior forward Keifonna Ferguson has the ability to take over a game which she put on display and earned PSAC Athlete of the Week honors during week four. Ferguson registered back-to-back double-doubles against PSAC rivals Mercyhurst and Gannon.
