Edinboro, Pa. – The Millersville wrestling team seeks improvement from past seasons in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Championships on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Marauders placed 12th last season.
This PSAC Championships is Kerry Regner's first time participating in the tournament as a head coach.
"We are excited to compete in such a prestigious tournament of rich tradition and competition," said Regner. "I look forward to watching each wrestler compete proudly for Millersville. I expect each guy to compete at their best and highest level. If they do that the outcome will be positive."
The Marauders have claimed victory in two duals in this season. In the first match of the season, Seth Decker led the team to a close 25-24 win over Wilkes University. Decker clinched the win when he pinned Ashton Gyenizs at the 1:20 mark that gave Millersville a 25-12 lead. The second victory was at home over Thaddeus Stevens where Millersville took a 51-4 win.
The team is winless against PSAC competition. All of the opponents, the Marauders have wrestled this season were nationally ranked. Seton Hill, Mercyhurst and Gannon were ranked inside the top 16 teams in the Division II rankings. Already with matches against top ranked teams, the Marauders have experience with wrestling against the top competition in the PSAC this season and looking to take advantage of that this weekend.
Colton Dull, Shane Ruhnke, Evan Morrill, David Wuestner and Keegan Worley all return with PSAC Championships experience. All but Wuestner went 0-2 last season. Wuestner placed sixth at 285 pounds. Wuestner, however, is redshirting this season.
This season, redshirt junior Alex Baider has an overall record of 6-1 that included going 2-1 against PSAC competition. Baider secured first place in the 133-pound weight class at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Senior D.J. Mele has won the same amount of bouts this season as Baider. Mele grabbed his first PSAC bout victory this season over Logan McKoy of Seton Hill in a 4-2 decision.
In the 125-pound weight class, sophomore Aaron Wildonger has recorded a 5-3 overall record which included a pin in the Seton Hill match where Wildonger took down No.2 ranked 125-pound wrestler, Alan Diltz, at the 2:43 mark. Wildonger also pinned Washington & Jefferson's Daniel Forentino with 49 seconds into the first period at the W&J Invitiational.
Ruhnke has won four consecutive bouts that included a pin over Gavin Wilderson of Mercyhurst last weekend. With a 5-3 record, Decker and Dull claimed victories over PSAC competition already. Decker won over Seton Hill's Zach Recklien (3-1) and Mercyhurst's Scott Dietrich (5-2). Dull claimed victory over Gannon's Gunner Loughman in a 15-0 technical fall at the 197-pound weight class.
In the 2015-16 season, Baider claimed fifth place at the 133-pound weight class with three wins through the weekend. Baider triumphed over Shippensburg's Dante Steffenino (5-2) and Gannon's Aaron Smith (9-5). In the fifth-place match, Baider won a 7-3 decision over Seton Hill's Rodney Sunday. Baider wrestled Sunday earlier this season, which Baider won 6-4 in overtime. 174-pound Kyle Narber won a consolation bracket match at the 2015 championship, taking a 12-6 decision over Casey Glunt of Bloomsburg.
The Marauders have not won a PSAC title since 1950-51 season. The last time a Millersville wrestler won an individual weight class in the PSAC Championship was 285-weight class Jerry McCoy in the 1995-96 championship. With a tie for first in number of championships, Lock Haven and Edinboro has claimed 19 titles over their school history. Edinboro has won the title for the last six consecutive seasons. The Fighting Scots have won the title, 18 years, since 1997-98 season with Clarion winning in 2010-11, Bloomsburg in 2004-05 and Lock Haven in 2000-01.
