
Ruhnke captures third place at the PSAC Wrestling Championships

Edinboro, Pa. – Redshirt junior Shane Ruhnke took third place in the 165-pound weight class in the 75th Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Championships Saturday. Seven of the 10 Millersville wrestlers won a bout.
The Marauders placed 10th out of 12 teams for its best finish since 2012. Ruhnke's finish was the highest by a Marauder since 2010. Lock Haven broke Edinboro's eight consecutive title run.
In the third place match of the 165-pound weight class, Ruhnke took a 6-2 first period advantage and then ended the second period leading 6-4. But it was all Ruhnke in the third, scoring six points for a 12-4 major decision win over Max Wohlabaugh of Clarion.
Ruhnke started his run with a pin of Ronald Palmer of Kutztown in the first round at the 1:26 mark of the first period. Ruhnke's pin was the fastest pin he recorded this season and the 22nd fall of his career. Ruhnke advanced to the championship quarterfinal match against Pitt-Johnstown's Devin Austin where Ruhnke claimed a 14-6 major decision win to put him in the semifinals. In the semifinal, Ruhnke wrestled Chance Marsteller of Lock Haven, the No. 8-ranked wrestler in Division I. Marsteller took the 16-1 technical fall and dropped into the semifinal of the consolation bracket where he claimed a 12-9 decision victory over Fritz Hoehn of Edinboro.
Senior Zachary Yackenchick (285) went all the way to the third round of the consolation bracket where he lost 7-1 to Shippensburg's Derrick Berberick. Yackenchick recorded a point for the team by winning 6-3 over Hunter Marhan of East Strousburg in the consolation second round.
In the 133-pound weight class, redshirt junior Alex Baider received a bye into the quarterfinals where he lost, 18-5, against No. 12 Korbin Myers of Edinboro. Baider won 5-2 decision over Aidan Burke of Mercyhurst. Baider and Burke wrestled each other at the Mercyhurst Duals where Burke took a 11-2 major decision. Baider evened up the series up with today's win. Baider, however, was knocked out with a loss in his next bout.
Junior Colton Dull reached the consolation quarterfinals at 197, going 1-2 on the day. Gunner Loughman and Wes Phipps had already faced Dull this season.
In the first round against Loughman of the championship bracket, Dull gained a 4-0 lead by a takedown and two near falls then increased the lead to 12-0 by receiving two near falls. Dull grabbed a 16-0 technical fall win. In the championship quarterfinals, Dull could not beat Phipps of Mercyhurst. With that loss, Dull moved onto the consolation bracket quarterfinals where he lost 2-0 against Seton Hill's Jake Temple.
Sophomore Aaron Wildonger went 1-2 in his 125-pound weight class bouts. Wildonger started with a 25-10 tech fall loss against Sean Russell of Edinboro in the opening round of the championship bracket. After the loss, Wildonger captured an 8-5 decision over David Reagan of Shippensburg in the second round of the consolation bracket. Wildonger got pinned by Mercyhurst's Eric Bartos at the 2:10 mark. Bartos gained a 2-0 advantage over Wildonger this season.
Senior D.J. Mele (141) had the same record in his bouts as Wildonger. Mele received a bye to the quarterfinals but could not overtake Clarion's Taylor Ortz for a 11-2 major decision loss. Mele moved into the second round of the consolation bracket by an 11-8 decision victory over Blake Cohen of East Stroudsburg. Pitt-Johnstown's Corey Falleroni won in a 9-5 decision over Mele in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Senior Seth Decker collected a 1-2 record in the 157-pound weight class that started with a loss in the first round of the championship bracket to Michael Springer of Shippensburg. In the second round of the consolation bracket, Decker pinned Seton Hill's Jake WIllochell at the 4:27 mark of the second period to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket where Decker could not overtake Michael O'Brien of Kutztown, 10-4.
The Marauders finished 2017 and look on to 2018 where they wrestle in the David H. Lehman Open on Saturday, Jan. 6.
