Millersville, Pa. - Amidst a run of six NCAA Atlantic Regional appearances in seven years and five in a row, the Millersville baseball program continues to reload, signing five high school seniors on National Signing Day.
The class includes: right-handed pitcher Kris Pirozzi (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg); right-handed pitcher Alex Mykut (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon); right-handed pitcher Aaron Feld (Christiana, Pa./Christiana); infielder Jimmy Losh (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Crest); infielder Tyler Wright (Exton, Pa./Devon Prep)
With only four seniors on the roster heading into the 2018 season (two position players and two seniors), the Marauders were limited on spots for its 2017 fall signing class. Already with eight non-senior outfielders on the roster, and after adding 12 new arms to the roster in the last two seasons, the coaching staff turned their attention to the middle of the infield and early impact arms.
"Because we are continuing to mature and don't lose a lot to graduation this spring, the 2018 class is a small one," said head coach
Jon Shehan. "Due to the low numbers needed, we were able to be very picky and zero in on a few players that we felt could make early impacts on the staff and the lineup. We needed to add depth on the mound and also in the middle infield.
Ted Williams and possibly Kaylor Kulina will be graduating, leaving two holes in the lineup and in the infield next year. On the mound, we lose
Stephen Muscovitch and
Dylan Boisclair to graduation too, and it is always hard to tell what will happen with the draft. Of course, the mound is always a huge priority in recruiting. The three arms in this class all project as quality PSAC starters early in their career."
Shehan knows first hand that a team can never have enough pitching, especially when making the extended postseason runs that the Marauders have in recent years. Following the 2016 season, the Marauders had a pair of junior starting pitchers (
Brandon Miller and Reid Anderson) selected in the MLB Draft. The unexpected exodus of arms resulted in the Marauders using five freshman pitchers last season.
Along with the team success of two NCAA Atlantic Region titles and six PSAC East titles since 2008, Shehan's program has shown a knack for developing players, placing eight in affiliated professional organizations. In 2017, Tim Mayza became the first Marauder to reach Major League Baseball since 1979. Since 2011, 31 All-PSAC East honors have been given out to players that Shehan brought in as freshmen.
"All five of these young men had opportunities to play at the Division I level," said Shehan. "But winning played a major factor in their all of their decisions. All five players chose to come here to get a quality education and to win a national championship. Sometimes it is hard to find student-athletes that value both their education and winning as a team over individual success, but I think we found five kids who share the same priorities that we do as a program. To say we are excited about this small group would be an understatement."
The high school seniors signed will enroll at Millersville in the fall of 2018.
"I want to thank our coaching staff for working relentlessly to put together another exciting class of future Marauders," said Shehan. "Our recruiting coordinator
David Baker did a fantastic job putting together one of our most talented classes yet. He is a tireless worker and should be given much of the credit. Coach Weigel and Coach Baker spent a lot of long hours on the road and we would not be able to continue to bring in championship caliber people into our program without their commitment to the job.
KRIS PIROZZI
RHP · 6-0 · 195 · R/R
Lampeter-Strasburg High School
About Pirozzi: Named All-Lancaster-Lebanon League as a junior, Pirozzi is a two-way player for the Pioneers....Hit .404 while posting a 0.78 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 36 innings on the mound...Plays for Keith Martin at L-S and Shaun Verneson's Keystone State Bombers.
Shehan on Pirozzi: "Kris is not just an outstanding pitcher, he is an outstanding student as well. His transcript is as close to perfect as I have seen in 10 years. On the mound, he has a chance to be special. We have had Kris up to 92 and he sits 88-90. His breaking ball has gotten a lot better throughout the process. Due to his velocity, he has not had to throw his change-up a lot, but it shows promise as a quality third pitch. Not only did we love Kris' stuff on the mound, he impressed us at shortstop as well. We don't see him at short—he will be a pitcher only. That said, he competes his tail off and is a super athlete. We had an opportunity to see him throw a lot this past spring and summer and it is no secret that he loves the big game atmosphere—that is one of the reasons I suspect he is coming to Millersville. He loves to compete."
Pirozzi on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because of the coaching staff, the baseball program. The environment is very special."
Pirozzi's Goals: "Become a better player and person--compete for a national championship."

AARON FELD
RHP · 6-2 · 198 · R/R
Octorara High School
About Feld: Feld was named All-Ches-Mont First Team and Philadelphia Inquirer All-Southeastern PA as a junior...Winner of the "Sixth Tool Award" as a junior...Academic honor roll student...Plays for Jed King at Octorara.
Shehan on Feld: "Aaron is an advanced pitcher. The most impressive thing about him is his preparation for each start. His work ethic is off the charts and he values much of the same philosophies in training that Coach Weigel does. On game day, Aaron seems to know exactly what he wants to do on each pitch and typically does a fantastic job executing. We saw him throw a few times during the high school season. Every time he got into trouble he made his best pitches to get out of it. He showed a lot of maturity. His stuff is generally in the mid 80's and he mixes in an above average breaking ball. His projectable frame and clean arm action leads us to believe that there is more in the tank. "
Feld on Millersville: "Millersville has a great baseball program and the coaching staff is fantastic. It is a place where I can grow as a person and a player. It has a very good business school and a great campus. We have a chance to play for a national title."
Feld's Goals: "Win a national championship, throw 90 MPH, get drafted, help my teammates get better, become a better pitcher and player."

ALEX MYKUT
RHP · 6-4 · 210 · R/R
Huntingdon Area High School
About Mykut: A three-sport athlete at Huntingdon...Plays linebacker for the football team and also wrestles...Was an all-conference selection as a catcher...Plays for George Zanic's Huntingdon Area team and Rick Robert's Flood City Elite club.
Shehan on Mykut: "Alex fits the traditional Marauder mold for pitchers—big, athletic, with a clean arm action. We saw Alex at Cooper Park and in Georgia, and he pitches in the mid to high 80's. He is likely going to throw a lot harder. By summer's end he was touching 88-89. Alex excels on the football field, the wrestling mat, and on the baseball field. He is a winner! I am really looking forward to seeing how he does when he puts all of his focus and energy into being the best pitcher he can be. His breaking ball has a lot of promise as well—the spin is there and with a few tweaks, we believe it will be a well above average pitch. Alex is our first player from Coach Rick Roberts and the Flood City Elite program which is exciting because they have a reputation for cranking out big time talent."
Mykut on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because of the combination of a quality academic school, a beautiful campus, and an excellent baseball program."
Mykut's Goals: "My baseball goal at Millersville is to help our team win a national championship."

JIMMY LOSH
INF · 5-11 · 170 · S/R
Cedar Cliff High School
About Losh: Named All-Sentinel First Team in 2017...Helped team to a District 3 championship...Member of the National Honor Society...Plays for Scott Lackey at Cedar Cliff and Mike Chroniger's Mid-Atlantic Rockies.
Shehan on Losh: "Jimmy has the leadership skills, communication skills, and intelligence to become a very good middle infielder and hitter. A theme for this class, he is an awesome student. He comes from Cedar Cliff High School which seems to be a hot bed for recruiting middle infielders for the Marauders. Jimmy is a different player from Tyler Orris and it is probably not fair to compare the two—Losh hits from both sides of the plate and will likely develop more power than Tyler. And even though he runs well, Losh is not quite as fast as Orris was. Losh has excellent hands and plenty of arm to play the left side of the infield, although his best position might end up being second base. We have been blessed with excellent second basemen for the past 10 years and I don't think Losh will end that trend. Losh played for Mike Chroniger and the Mid-Atlantic Rookies—the same team that Marauders Jeff Heisey,
Drew Miller,
Brandon Harper,
Brandon White, Kurt Seiders, and Luke Trainer played with."
Losh on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because of its elite, winning baseball program, great coaching staff, and a comfortable overall fit: academically and socially."
Losh's Goals: "My primary goal is to make a difference however the team needs me. I want to be a part of keeping this program at an elite level and to go to new heights."

TYLER WRIGHT
INF · 5-10 · 155 · L/R
Devon Prep School
About Wright: Named All-Bicentennial League and All-Main-Line First Team as a junior...Played varsity soccer and basketball before focusing on baseball...Plays for Mark Aquilante and Devon and Con Aquilante with the Philadelphia Angels.
Shehan on Wright: "Tyler is a winner and it didn't take long to see it during the recruiting process. He does the little things well—moving runners, bunting, using the whole field at the plate. His understanding of the game is a credit to his summer coach Con Aquilante who does an awesome job teaching the sometimes mundane, overlooked aspects of the game. We know when we get a player from Con that he is going to fit the culture here as well. Tyler runs very well and hits from the left side. While Losh could be a middle of the lineup type of guy, Wright will likely be a leadoff type. He is "rangy" at short stop, and his arm strength will surprise you—it is well above average and projects well at the position. Like Losh, he is an excellent student and has big academic goals.
Wright on Millersville: "The people and the culture just seemed to fit for me. Everybody is looking out for one another yet everyday the team is competing to get better."
Wright's Goals: "Win a national championship."
Academic Interest: Double major in finance/business administration and accounting.
