Millersville, Pa. - Everything went the Millersville Marauders' way in the second set of Tuesday's PSAC East volleyball match against Shippensburg. But the 17 kills and a 25-16 set win did not translate into sets three and four and the visiting Raiders stayed unbeaten in divisional play with a 3-1 win over the Marauders (25-19, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20).
A season-high 14 attack errors and -.171 hitting percentage in the opening set put the Marauders behind, but led by Haley Butler's seven kills on eight swings, the Marauders rolled in set two to even the match. Millersville piled up 17 kills on just 31 attempts, committing two errors. Katie Laughman, who finished the match with 38 assists, totaled 14 in the second set.
With the set tied at 9-9, Millersville ripped off six consecutive points, using three consecutive kills from Butler, building a 15-9 advantage. The Marauders led by as many as nine and no fewer than six the rest of the way.
But the Marauders could not replicate the second set success. They mustered nine kills and six errors in the third, and Shippensburg totaled 15 kills to just two errors--hitting .433--in the deciding fourth set. The Marauders also committed nine service errors, and its two service aces tied for their fewest of the season.
Millersville trailed 14-12 in the third but Shippensburg scored on six of the next seven rallies, aided by three Millersville errors. The fourth set played out in similar fashion with the Marauders staying close at 17-15 before Shippensburg scored on seven of the next eight rallies.
Butler and Erin Harman led Millersville with 13 kills.
Millersville drops to 11-4 (4-3 PSAC) while Shippensburg (14-5, 7-0 PSAC) extended its winning streak to eight. The Marauders travel to West Chester on Oct. 13.
