No. 22 Millersville drops its first match at home against Jefferson
10/10/2017 10:06:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. -- No. 22 Millersville lost its first game at Pucillo Field this season after falling to out-of-conference opponent Jefferson 4-1 Tuesday night. This was also Millersville's first loss to an out-of-conference opponent this season.
Millersville largely dominated possession and had its chances throughout the first half. The Marauders registered five shots and earned four corner kicks. However, Jefferson made the most of their three attempts on goal during the first half. A long ball played from the defensive half set up a difficult one-on-one with sophomore Darian McCauley that the Rams converted in the 15th minute to lead 1-0. The Rams doubled their lead in the 39th minute with a shot just over McCauley's hands that ducked down and scraped the bottom of the cross bar and into the goal.
Millersville halved the Jefferson lead early in the second half. Senior Ryan Phelps bicycled the ball up the middle to sophomore Jacob Gosselin. Gosselin pushed the ball up near the box before chipping it against the keeper's finger tips and into the back of the net.
Momentum almost swung in Millersville's favor as Phelps and Gosselin were inches away from their second link up of the game and the equalizer in the 62nd minute. Phelps played a through ball from left to center and Gosselin blasted the ball past the keeper. Unfortunately for the Marauders, the line judge raised his flag for an offsides call.
Four minutes after the offsides call, Jefferson struck again after an individual dribbling effort at the left side of the box opened an opportunity for the Rams to convert a shot to the right. The Rams followed up their effort with a ground ball into the back of the net in the 72nd minute.
A red card against Jefferson's Ignacio Hernandez in the 74th minute provided Millersville a man advantage, but Jefferson's keeper was the x-factor in the game and stopped four shots on goal during the second period.
More worrisome than the loss for the Marauders, McCauley had to exit the game in the 71st minute with an apparent leg injury. Redshirt junior Cody Breen came on to play the final 20 minutes and will figure into Head Coach Steve Widdowson's goalkeeping plans if McCauley is out for an extended period of time.
Millersville has put together a strong resume against out-of-conference opponents and has the opportunity to rebound after an uncharacteristic loss. The Marauders still have one last non-conference game at St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 24 to help aid their case for placement in the NCAA tournament. Before that, Millersville head to conference rival Slippery Rock Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. in search of three more points in the conference standings.
