Marauders Charge Back to Finish 10th

Baldwinsville, N.Y. - Led by senior captain Robby Rowe, the Millersville men's golf mounted a valiant comeback in the third and final round of the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional. The deficit, however, was too great to overcome and despite an even-par 72 Rowe and a 304 team score, the Marauders tied for 10th in the 20-team field--19 shots out of NCAA Championship qualifying position.
The same score that the Marauders posted in the first round to take the tournament lead was posted again on Wednesday. But the Marauders entered the final round 16 shots out of the fifth and final qualifying spot following a disastrous 320 team score on Tuesday. Rowe's third round 72 was backed by Connor Sheehan's 1-over-par 73. Bret Howey shot a 79--his best score of the tournament. The Marauders posted the fifth-best score of the round.
St. Thomas Aquinas ran away with the team title, posting an 897 total and topping Southern New Hampshire by six shots. Concordia, Wilmington and Le Moyne grabbed the other three qualifying spots.
In addition to the top five teams, the top two individuals not on a qualifying team also earned a berth to the national championship. Rowe, who missed an individual qualifying spot by just two shots in 2015, pulled himself into contention again. But his second round 81 proved to be the difference. Rowe finished at 9-over-par and in a tie for 14th, missing the national championships by just three strokes. Mercyhurst's Blaze Hogan (2-over) and West Chester's Tyler Maiman (6-over) grabbed the two championship spots.
Sheehan finished at 10-over-par for the tournament, placing 18th in the 108-player field. He bested his previous three-round totaled by two strokes.
Rowe, the team's lone senior, finished his career with the second-lowest scoring average in Marauder history at 75.9, just a tenth of a stroke off of Scott Mickelwright's record of 75.8. His 84 career rounds rank third-most all-time. He posted 21 top-10 finishes in 40 events, had top-15 finishes in each of the last two NCAA super regionals and finished in the top three at the PSAC Championship twice. Rowe is also the only Marauder to be in the lineup for four super regionals.
