ABOUT THE GAMES
• Millersville became just the third PSAC team to achieve a regular season No. 1 ranking and the first since 2000 earlier this week. The Marauders have won 13 in a row and most recently scored 34 runs against Lincoln, coming within six of the PSAC and school record. The Marauders are 18-2 in PSAC East play and hold a five-game lead and tiebreakers over East Stroudsburg and West Chester with eight games remaining. That lead puts Millersville in position to possibly clinch a fourth consecutive PSAC East title this weekend. No team has won four in a row since Mansfield from 1992-96. Millersville is also looking to set a program record for most regular season wins. The 2000 club owns that distinction after going 42-12 in the regular season.
• Shippensburg is battling for a spot in the postseason. Currently sitting in the No. 4 spot in the East, Shippensburg holds a one-game lead over Kutztown for the final playoff spot. The Raiders have won five of six including three against Kutztown and a 15-0 non-conference win over USciences.
•
Tyler Orris' epic streak of 203 consecutive starts at shortstop came to an end last weekend, but
Chas McCormick stepped into the leadoff role and delivered a PSAC East Athlete of the Week performance, hitting .538 with three multi-hit and multi-RBI games against Bloomsburg. He added three more hits against Lincoln, giving him 10 hits, eight runs and 10 RBIs in his last four games. He had gone the previous 10 games with just five hits and four RBIs.
•
Dan Stoltzfus is also heating up. On a 16-game hitting streak, Stoltzfus has pushed his average to .435 and now ranks fourth in the PSAC in hitting. Millersville is the only team with four hitters in the PSAC's top 10. Stoltzfus also ranks seventh in RBIs with 43, which puts his career total at 151--just seven shy of Zach Stone's career record of 158. Stone's hits record (267) is also in jeopardy when Orris returns to the lineup. Orris sits at 256.
• All four of Millersville's weekend starters rank 13th or higher in the PSAC in ERA.
Brandon Miller (1.93) is fifth, with
Cordell Shannon ranking eight.
Jim McDade is 10th and
Reid Anderson is 13th. Mercyhurst is the only other team with three ranked that highly. Shannon's 3.31 ERA and 6-1 record puts him in the running for PSAC East Freshman of the Year honors. He recently set the Millersville freshman record for wins. Anderson, likely the game four starter on Saturday, has allowed just two earned runs over his last 18.0 innings of work. He's pitched five or more innings in three consecutive starts and has not allowed more than four hits in any of those starts. Anderson has given up just 33 hits over 42.2 innings.
SERIES HISTORY
• Millersville and Shippensburg have a long history but its only been recently that Millersville has had the upperhand in the series. Shippensburg owns a 107-63-1 record since 1957, but Millersville is 16-14 against the Raiders under
Jon Shehan, and Shippensburg has won just one season series (2012) since joining the PSAC East in 2009. Millersville has won the first three games of the series in each of the last three seasons but has lost game four in each series.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• Shippensburg has a strong lineup (.303 as a team) led by shortstop Mike Marcinko, who is hitting .376 with six homers. Jake Kennedy, an All-Atlantic Region pick at catcher in 2015 has slowly returned from injury, appearing in just 19 games. He hit 19 homers in 2015 but has just one homer in 2016 and is hitting 8-for-43.
• Shippensburg fields the ball as well as any in the PSAC, ranking second with .971 fielding percentage. Marcinko and fellow infielder Ryan McMillen are both former All-PSAC East picks.
• Ship's team ERA of 6.96 ranks 12th in the PSAC. Only Mark Curtis (5.71) has started 10 games. Kyle McClintock owns the team's best ERA at 4.21 but has started just three games in 16 appearances. He did recently make starts against ESU and Kutztown, pitching six innings in both. Marcus Shippey is the top strikeout pitcher, fanning 46 in 42 innings.
