WEEKEND NOTES• Already boasting a 10-1 record and a No. 4 ranking in the Collegiate Baseball Poll, the Millersville Marauders make their home debut on Thursday, starting a run of five games in three days against three opponents. Saint Rose, Le Moyne and Post all visit Cooper Park to try to knock off a club that has won eight in a row. The Marauders' No. 4 ranking is the highest in program history, and its 10-1 start is the best since the 2001 team opened 11-1. Millersville is hitting .337 as a team and has pushed 110 runs across the plate--an average of 10 per game. Millersville has scored double-digit runs in five of the last seven games and has topped the 20-run mark twice.
• As good as Millersville's hitting has been, its pitching has been just as good. The Marauders rank No. 1 in the PSAC in team ERA with a 2.53 mark, allowing a league-low 16 extra base hits and .224 batting average against. The bullpen has allowed just six earned runs in 33.2 innings (1.61 ERA), and has struck out 34. Five members of the bullpen have pitched at least two innings without giving up a run.
• Junior right-hander
Brandon Miller, likely the game one starter of the this week's series of games, has won the PSAC East Pitcher of the Week award twice already, owning a 0.00 ERA and .091 batting average against through 19.2 innings. He has struck out 20 compared to one walk and six hits for a WHIP of 0.36. Miller's streak of consecutive innings without an earned run allowed is now at 22.2 innings.
• Freshman
Cordell Shannon has also been impressive, striking out 20 while walking just two in 16.2 innings. Shannon is 1-1 in two starts and three appearances, owning a 3.78 ERA.
•
Tyler Orris has led the PSAC in assists for three consecutive seasons and is on the doorstep of history. The senior shortstop has 538 career assists and is just four shy of tying Torrey Bomberger's longstanding Millersville record that was set in 2000. While Bomberger set his mark in 196 games, Orris has needed just 180 to close within four. Orris ranks 14th in Division II history and third in PSAC history. The PSAC mark is held by West Chester's Nick Spisak at 636. Orris' 180 consecutive games played and consecutive starts streak is No. 1 among Division II players. He is also fourth among active Division II players in career stolen bases with 78. The school record was set in 1988 by Ernest McCoy at 97. No other player has come within 30 steals of McCoy's record.
• No Marauder is off to a better start than
Mitch Stoltzfus. The junior catcher is hitting .583 through 11 games. He leads the team with 17 RBis and a .614 on base percentage. He was named as the NCBWA Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week on Feb. 24. He has an eight-game hitting streak and most recently went 8-for-9 with seven RBIs and six runs scored in a two-day span against Saint Rose and Francis Marion.
• His cousin,
Dan Stoltzfus, is hot on his heels for the team lead in hitting. Dan is hitting .500 and also has a tema-high six doubles. Dan, however, is still in search of his first homer of the season after setting the school record with 15 homers in 2015.
• Since the opponent of Cooper Park in 2007, Millersville is 106-40-1 (.724) at home. After a 5-11 record in the park's first season, the Marauders have gone 101-29-1 (.781) since 2008. Millersville went 15-2 at home last season. The Marauders have also won six of nine home openers in the history of Cooper Park.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS• Millersville and Saint Rose met for two games two weeks ago in Florence, S.C. Millersville won the first by a narrow 4-2 score but then rolled to a 14-3 win in game two. Millersville hit .348 as a team while limiting Saint Rose to a .219 average.
Cordell Shannon started on game, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings.
Jim McDade started the other, allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Jeremy Musser,
Mitch Stoltzfus and
John Brogan hit home runs in the series. Saint Rose is still in search of its first win.
• Millersville tangled with Le Moyne for three games in Williamston, N.C., last season with Millersville winning all three.
Jon Shehan is 4-0 all-time against Le Moyne. The Dolphins are off to an 8-4 start with Gabe Levanti as their top hitter. He owns a .400 average with eight RBIs. Pitcher Sam Walsh has been outstanding, winning all three of his starts with a 1.80 ERA.
• Post is 5-4 and familiar with the PSAC. It has wins over Mansfield and California and a loss to East Stroudsburg. The team has hit .240 in nine games. Matthew D'Ariano is a pitcher to watch, boasting a 1.40 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. Reliever Nick Arnold is 2-0 with 18 strikeouts to three walks in 12.2 innings. He has allowed just one earned run.
