TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
• Millersville wrestling travels to Erie, Pa., for the two-day Super Region 1 Championships, which begins on Friday afternoon. A total of 15 teams send wrestlers to the site with the top four placewinners in each weight class advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships.
• Millersville was ranked No. 10 out of 15 teams in the most recent regional poll, which is voted on by coaches. Millersville has not produced a national qualifier since Mike Greck advanced to the NCAA Division I Championships in 2011. Since making the transition to Division II in 2012-13, several Marauders have come close. Three Marauders placed sixth in 2013 and one has placed fifth in each of the last two seasons. Last season, the Marauders placed 13th out of 15 teams.
REGION RUNDOWN
• Super Region 1 is among the most competitive in the nation with four teams ranking in the nation's top 20. Three of those teams--Mercyhurst, Pitt-Johnstown and Notre Dame College--are in the top 10. Notre Dame is the naton's No. 1-ranked team with three former national champions in the lineup. Jonatan Rivera (157), Joey Davis (184) and Garrett Lineberger (197) lead Notre Dame, and Davis has won three consecutive national titles with a 123-0 career record.
• Pitt-Johnstown is ranked No. 3 in Division II and defeated the Marauders 44-0 in early February. Pitt-Johnstown went 15-1 in dual action with a lone loss to No. 2-ranked St. Cloud. UPJ boasts four nationally-ranked wrestlers in 285-pound D.J. Simms (No. 2), 184-pound Travis McKillop (No. 2), 133-pound Nick Roberts (No.6) and 125-pound Evan Link (No. 3). McKillop is second in Division II with 12 pins.
• Mercyhurst is a strong contender as well and has three nationally-ranked wrestlers including the Mizia brothers, August and Francis at 174 and 165 respectively.
• Wheeling Jesuit has made tremendous strides since starting the program in 2012. The Cardinals went 11-6 this season and rank No. 17. Four Cardinals boast at least 19 wins and 125-pound Dustin Warner is ranked eighth nationally.
• Other teams with contenders include Seton Hill with 149-pound Ty Lydic (No. 7). Kutztown's Matt Martoccio is ranked No. 5 at 157 pounds. East Stroudsburg's Tyson Searer is ranked No. 7 at 285 pounds.
MARAUDER OUTLOOK
• Millersville posted a 6-9 record in duals, going 5-7 against teams in Super Region 1. Millersville's best chance for a national qualifer is likely Alex Baider at 133. Baider was pegged No. 6 in the latest regional poll and produced a banner season with a 21-11 record. Baider went 9-3 against Super Region 1 competition in duals. The three wrestlers ranked ahead of him that he has faced he has lost to a total of four times--twice to Wheeling Jesuit's Nolan Whitley and once to Pitt-Johnstown's Nick Roberts. Baider wrestled at 125 pounds in last season's tournament, going 0-2.
• Austin Camacci has posted another strong season at 125 pounds, going 14-11. The region's No. 6 ranked Zach Brown of West Liberty in November and beat No. 3 Dustin Warner of Wheeling Jesuit by major decision in February. Mercyhurst's Willie Bohince won the tournament last season. Camacci did not compete.
• 141-pound Thomas Nulty picked up one win in the tournament a year ago and went 15-14 with a team-best four technical falls this season. 149-pound Nick Haegele sees his first postseason action after posting 10 wins. Similarly, 157-pound D.J. Mele, 165-pound Seth Decker, 174-pound Nick Mancini and 197-pound Colton Dull are all getting their first taste of Super Region 1 Championships. Dull scored four consecutive wins over in-region opponents--all with bonus points. He has since lost three in a row by close decisions. All three opponents were ranked in the region's top six.
• Kyle Narber won two bouts at the championships in 2015 and has won three of the last five against Super Region 1 opponents.
• Sophomore heavyweight David Wuestner has produced as solid season with an 17-14 record, and is no stranger to the tournament after posting a 1-2 record at the event in 2015. Wuestner is in a loaded class, though. He went 6-6 against in-region opponents and has lost three narrow decisions to ESU's Searer, Pitt-Johnstown's Sims and Kutztown's Ryan Appleby, who are all ranked in the region's top six. He lost by a combined total of six points in those three bouts.
