Erie, Pa. - After the first day of competition in the NCAA Super Region 1, five Marauders are still eligible to qualify for nationals. Austin Camacci, Alex Baider, Thomas Nulty, D.J. Mele and David Wuestner can all still finish in the top four in their respective weight classes.
All five have little margin for error, though, as they work their way through the consolation brackets. In the 125-pound division, Austin Camacci began with a technical fall victory over American International's Brian Lavalley before falling to Pitt-Johnstown's Evan Link. In his first matchup in the consolation round, Camacci scored another technical fall, this time over LIU's Joe Paterno. Camacci will face Kutztown's Austin Petril tomorrow and needs two wins to advance to the third-place match.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the 133 bracket, Alex Baider fell in his first match but bounced back to beat Seton Hill's Rodney Sunday in a 7-6 decision. Baider will take on West Liberty's Bryce Humphreys with a chance to advance to the final four.
Senior Thomas Nulty (141) opened with a major decision victory over American International's Scott Coleman before falling in the second round. Nulty would bounce back in the consolation bracket, defeating Wheeling Jesuit's Kollin Clark via technical fall (19-4). Nulty will face a familiar foe in East Stroudsburg's Dylan Nace on Saturday as the two battle to stay alive for nationals. When the two squared off Feb. 4, Nace scored an 11-4 victory over Nulty.
In the 157-pound division, D.J. Mele was pinned but quickly recovered to edge out Ohio Valley's Sam Phillips in a 3-2 decision. Mele then scored a second decision (6-3) over Long Island's Jacskon Mordente. Mele will face Wheeling Jesuit's Reyse Wallbrown tomorrow.
In the heavyweight division, David Wuestner began his afternoon with a pinfall victory over Seton Hill's Alex Soutiere before Mercyhurst's Andy Welton returned the favor in the second round. Wuestner responded by dominating Derek Earnest to the tune of a 6-1 decision. Wuesnter will take on East Stroudsburg's Tyson Searer Saturday to determine who will advance to the final eight. Wuestner and Searer battled to the end earlier this month, with Searer edging out Wuestner by a 2-1 decision
Action continues from Mercyhurst University on Saturday.
