THE MATCH-UP
• Millersville's 2016 home finale is Saturday, and the game also doubles as Homecoming and Senior Day. The Marauders have lost five in a row since the season-opening win over Pace, but the last three losses have all been by two scores--an average margin of 13.7 points per game. Four of the team's six losses have come by two scores or fewer.
• Since the tracking of Homecoming games began in 1968, Millersville is 22-22-1 all-time and has lost three in a row on Homecoming. The Marauders' last Homecoming win came in 2012 against Cheyney. Millersville and Shippensburg have met on Homecoming Saturday two times with Shippensburg winning both, including a 2011 game by a 40-0 score.
• Shippensburg has scored 60 and 63 points in the last two games against Millersville, and have totaled more than 60 points in four of the last seven meetings dating back to 2009. Shippensburg has won 12 in a row dating to 2001. Millersville has averaged just under 13 points per game in that span with a high of 27 (2004). Shippensburg has averaged 42.5 points per game in the same stretch.
• Shippensburg held Millersville to 111 yards of offense in last season's meeting including -29 yards rushing, sacking Millersville's QB 10 times. Shippensburg scored five touchdowns on special teams and defense, returning three punts, one interception and a fumble for scores.
• Shippensburg is rolling into Saturday's game after dropping 76 points and rushing for 334 yards against Cheyney. Ship's offense is versatile, having rushed for 257 yards or more three times while passing for 256 yards or more three times. At 5-2 overall, Shippensburg remains in contention for the postseason with a strong finish over the final four games.
SCOUTING BY THE NUMBERS
• Redshirt freshman quarterback
Tony Staffieri gained 82 yards on the ground against Lock Haven but lost 56 when accounting for sacks. He has totaled 280 yards in rushing gains in his two appearances. After throwing for three touchdowns in his debut, he came up empty in that column against Lock Haven, but did rush for two on the ground. Staffieri has accounted for all five of the team's touchdowns since entering the lineup.
• Scoring will be difficult for the Marauders against Shippensburg. The Marauders rank 15th in the PSAC in scoring offense at 17.1 points per game while Shippensburg's defense is second in scoring, allowing just 15.9 points per game. Millersville's offense is 15th in total yards, and Shippensburg is third-best in total defense. The Raiders' run defense has been especially strong, allowing a mere 82 yards on the ground. Millersville, meanwhile, has averaged just 78.1 yards per game on offense, ranking last in the league.
• Shippensburg is one of five teams in the PSAC to average more than 200 yards per game on the ground, but it's a balanced attack with three players having rushed for 288 and no player with more than 445. Chase Yocum averages a team-best 6.6 yards per carry while Cole Chiappialle leads the team with seven rushing touchdowns.
• Ryan Zapoticky has thrown only four touchdown passes in 146 attempts. He ranks 14th in the PSAC in pass attempts, but is a threat on the ground, having rushed for 174 yards.
TARGETS FOR TIGHT END
• Tight end
Tyler Zilen has been among the team's top targets this season. His seven catches against Bloomsburg were the most by a Marauder tight end in more than 15 seasons, and he has caught 22 passes and is second on the team with two touchdowns. Zilen has now caught 37 passes and four touchdowns in 27 career games. His 22 catches are the most by a Marauder tight end since Chris Hemmert's 26 in 1998. 36 of Zilen's catches have come in his last 14 games.
EARLY RETURNS
• Since becoming Millersville's primary kickoff returner two games ago,
Tyrone Gibson has become an important part of the Marauders' special teams. Gibson has seven kick returns for a total of 198 yards and an average of 28.3 per return. He ripped off a 55-yard return in his first career attempt and then recorded a 41-yarder against Lock Haven.
ACTIVE BACKS
• Millersville's starting secondary has broken up 24 passes in six games.
Jarrid Satterfield leads the way with eight, ranking ninth in the PSAC.
• Both starting safeties,
P.J. Santos and
Kendall Marks, have recorded interceptions, and Santos leads the team with three after totaling two against Lock Haven. Santos' 89-yard INT return against Kutztown was the longest in the PSAC this season by 20 yards, and his 132 yards in total returns ranks first. Millersville's three touchdowns off interceptions (two scored by linebacker
Jaleel Robinson) lead all PSAC teams.
• Santos has recorded at least three interceptions in each of the last three seasons. He ranked 10th in the PSAC last season and is currently tied for fourth. His 10 career picks ranks him in a tie for ninth in Millersville history.
DUGAN'S DEFENSE
•
Sean Dugan ranks second in the PSAC in tackles per game at 10.1. Dugan has recorded double-digit tackles in four of six seven and in two of the last three.
• He was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after totaling a career-high 19 tackles against Seton Hill. Dugan's 19 stops were the most by a Marauder in the "Statcrew Era" (since 2002). He was one shy of the national high for the season.
WIGGINS WATCH
•
Kevin Wiggins, now a junior, has caught a pass in 28 consecutive games dating back to the start of his freshman season. Now with 119 career grabs in 28 games, Wiggins was the second-fastest to 100 catches in program history, trailing only Millersville all-time leader Sean Scott. Wiggins recently moved into seventh place on Millersville's career receptions list and sixth in career touchdowns.
• Wiggins has two 100-yard games in 2016 and three in his career.
• Wiggins ranks 16th in the PSAC in catches after tying for 11th in the PSAC in touchdowns and 20th in catches in 2015. He also ranks 13th in touchdown catches.
• Wiggins was voted the team's offensive MVP in 2015.
• Since 2001, only three wide receivers have caught 40 or more passes in two consecutive seasons. Wiggins joined Jamal Smith (2009-10) and Andy Neupauer (2003-04).
BIG BOOT
•
Evan Stahl leads the PSAC in punting average at 41.7 yards per punt. In game one against Pace, he averaged 49.3 yards on six punts. He's landed nine inside the 20 and has seven punts of 50 or more, which is second among PSAC punters. His 63-yarder against Pace was the second-longest of his career and his best since a 69-yard punt in 2013. The last Marauder punter averaged more than 40 yards per punt for an entire season was John Banzhof (40.8) in 2008. That averaged stands as the school record.
