GAME OVERVIEW• After losing a five-overtime game against Ursinus in week one, the Marauders travel to Clarion where it has not won since 2003. The Marauders will look to avenge last season's 55-16 loss at home and try to avoid starting 0-2 for the sixth time since 2006.
• Millersville and Ursinus played to a 0-0 tie in regulation--the first time that had happened at Millersville since a 1972 0-0 tie with Shepherd. The Marauders held Ursinus to 30 yards rushing and 184 yards of total offense in regulation. The defense registered eight sacks, which was the most for a Marauder defense in more than 15 seasons. Millersville finished 2014 ranked 15th in total defense and scoring defense but the performance in week one continues a trend that started at the end of the 2014 season. Over the last three games, Millersville has allowed 11.0 points per game in regulation (16.7 total), and 287.7 yards of total offense. Millersville's last two opponents have mustered just 44 total rushing yards, and the Marauders have recorded 13 sacks and 22 tackles for loss.
• The Millersville and Clarion offenses could not look more different after week one. While Millersville rushed for 178 yards, it passed for just 43 as redshirt freshman
Blake Cahill played in his first collegiate game. Meanwhile, Clarion put up 407 yards through the air, which was the most by any PSAC team in the week. After week one, Clarion ranks second in the league in scoring offense and fourth in total offense. Millersville ranks last in scoring offense and total offense. Clarion possessed the ball for more than 40 minutes in the 60-minute game.
• Clarion surrendered only 13 points but gave up 401 yards of offense including 195 on the ground. Both team's showed an ability to cause turnovers. Millersville intercepted four passes including three in the first half. Clarion's defense generated five turnovers, scooping up four fumbles and intercepting a pass. Millersville's four picks were the most in a game since Oct. 22, 2011 against East Stroudsburg.
ABOUT THE SERIES• Millersville and Clarion have met just 14 times previously, and Clarion holds an 8-6 edge in the series. Clarion has also won five of the last six dating back to 1998 and has won three in a row since 2010. Clarion has averaged 46 points per game in those three wins.
• Clarion and Millersville played for the PSAC Championship in 1977. An 8-2 Marauder team with a spotless 5-0 record was edged 25-24.
• The 2014 meeting, Millersville went from trailing 7-0 with 26 seconds remaining in the first half to trailing 28-0 one drive into the third quarter. Millersville committed five turnovers and Clarion recovered an onside kick that helped the visitors to a 55-16 win.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES• Clarion enters 2015 coming off a 2-9 record and it has a new head coach in alum Chris Weibel. Weibel was an All-American quarterback for the Golden Eagles before his graduation in 1998. He played professional football in the IFL, AFL2 and NIFL. He is also a member of the Clarion Hall of Fame.
• Clarion finished 2014 ranked 15th in the league in total offense and 13th in scoring offense. There were no signs of a repeat performance in the 2015 season opener as Clarion scored 40 points on Lock Haven. Connor Simmons, who completed 49.4 percent of his passes for 1,808 yards last season, hit on 29-of-43 attempts for 407 yards and four touchdowns against Lock Haven. Two of his receivers--Matt Lehman and Kevin Genevro--went over 100 yards in the opener.
SMASHING DEBUT• It didn't take long for redshirt freshman
Rob Varner to make an impact on Millersville's defense. In the 2015 season opener and Varner's first collegiate game, he piled up 15 tackles, intercepted a pass, recorded a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. On Sunday, he was recognized as the PSAC Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week. Dating back to last season, Varner is the second Marauder in the last three games to win the award.
• His 15 tackles were the third-most in the PSAC last week and were the most on record by a Marauder freshman in his debut.
YOUTH IN ACTION• Millersville's season-opening starting lineup featured 11 players making their first starts at a position, and 12 were freshmen or sophomores. Nine true or redshirt freshmen recorded statistics in the game.
CAHILL UNDER CENTER• After an open position battle through spring ball and fall camp, redshirt freshman
Blake Cahill was named Millersville's opening night starter at quarterback. Cahill edged out a pair of veterans in
J.J. Paige and
Curtis Frye. Paige played in all 11 games last season and threw 89 passes, completing 47.2 percent for 380 yards and four interceptions. Frye missed nearly all of two seasons with knee injuries. He last played in 2013, completing 63 percent of his 54 passes without a touchdown. Cahill has yet to take a collegiate snap but threw for 2,915 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 588 at Red Lion High School. Cahill was the first Marauder freshman to start the season opener since Jamal Smith in 2007. Smith won PSAC East Offensive Freshman of the Year that season but eventually became an All-PSAC East wide receiver.
• Breitbach is looking for consistency at the quarterback position. Remarkably, in just two seasons, seven different players have taking snaps for the Marauders. The last Marauder to start every game in a season was Bill Shirk in 2010. Cahill was the fifth different quarterback in as many seasons to start a season opener.
SANELLI'S STREAK• A mainstay of the offensive line entering his fourth season is
Lenny Sanelli. The senior has started all 34 games since stepping onto campus in 2012, and his consecutive starts streak ranks second in the PSAC to only Bloomsburg quarterback Tim Kelly, who has logged 37 in a row.
TARGETING WIGGINS• Sophomore wide receiver
Kevin Wiggins became the first Marauder freshman in history to lead the team in catches by hauling in 43 for 402 yards. He also led the team with four touchdown catches. He has caught a pass in all 12 games of his career. While only a sophomore, Wiggins is a wiley veteran compared to the rest of the wide receiver corps. The other 10 receivers on the roster entered 2015 combined for a grand total of one catch as Marauders. That catch was made by
Sean Quarterman last season. Transfer
C.J. Bostic may not have a catch as a Marauder but he is no stranger to making big plays. At Division III Becker College in 2011-12, Bostic caught 78 balls for over 1,100 yards. He has been away from the game for the last two seasons, though.
MAKING THE CALLS• After handling the offensive playcalling duties in his first two seasons, Breitbach is handing over that role to
Mike Wood, who spent 2014 as the team's wide receivers coach. It is a familiar role for Wood who won a Northeast-10 Championship and reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs as the OC at American International. Wood's offense at AIC led the NE-10 in rushing and he tutored the league's offensive MVP and lineman of the year. Breitbach will continue to coach the quarterbacks.
STRENGTH IN THE SECONDARY• Millersville returns its starting secondary intact and the eight players on the two-deep have combined for 75 career starts. The leader among them is safety
Rasheed Johnson, who has started 27 games including 21 of the last 22. Johnson has ranked in the top 20 in the PSAC in tackles in each of the last two seasons.
•
Joey Pham developed into a strong cover corner in 2014, starting all 11 games (21 of the last 22) and ranked eighth in the PSAC with 13 passes defended.
P.J. Santos tied for seventh in the league with four interceptions, recovered two fumbles and also returned a fumble for a touchdown. He had four interceptions in the last six games.
• The secondary produced a strong effort in the opener, as Pham, Santos and Johnson all intercepted passes.
• Pham broke up four passes and ranks first in the PSAC after week one. Santos has intercepted a pass in five of his last seven games. Johnson's 11 tackles marked the eighth time in his career that he has totaled double-digit tackles in a game.
FRESH FACES IN FRONT SEVEN• While the back end of Millersville's defense is veteran, there is not a single upperclassman listed as a starter in the front seven. The group includes three redshirt sophomores, a true sophomore, two redshirt freshmen and a true freshman.
Drew Seaburg is the leader of the defensive line after starting all 11 games in 2014. He has started 12 consecutive games. The linebackers have a pair of returning starters in
Sene Polamalu in
Sean Dugan but redshirt freshman and Temple transfer
Rob Varner and freshman
Brendan Thompson will man the inside.
• While young, few players were as productive in 2014 as outside backers Polamalu and Dugan. Polamalu was voted the team's rookie of the year after leading the team with 8.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. Both he and Dugan picked up production down the stretch. Polamalu totaled seven TFL and 3.5 sacks in the last six games while Dugan, voted the team's most improved player, made 35 stops, 6.0 TFL and 2.5 sacks in the final five games.
• The Marauder linebackers were super-productive in the opener. In addition to Varner winning the PSAC East's weekly defensive award, Polamalu recorded a PSAC-best 2.5 sacks. Dugan was also active behind the line making a sack and 2.0 tackles for loss.
LEANING ON THE FRESHMEN• Not a single running back on Millersville's roster entered 2015 with a collegiate carry to his credit. Millersville suffered a tough blow when senior and 2014 leading rusher
Myron Myles suffered a season-ending knee injury in camp. His injury left converted wide receiver
Cimirrow Moat as the starter and true freshmen
Phil Overton and
Sheldon Snell as back-ups. Moat totaled a PSAC-most 26 carries in the opening game against Ursinus but is not expected to play in week two with an injury. The rookies flashed in game one.
Sheldon Snell had a 51-yard run but fumbled on the play. Overton played mostly in overtime, totaling 10 carries and catching two passes for 21 yards.
