GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville enters the final stretch of the regular season with five games left, one of which is Thursday's nine-inning game against USciences. The Marauders have never lost to USciences and they are heavy favorites on Thursday. The Marauders boast a 33-9 record and are ranked No. 21 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and No. 19 by the NCBWA. If the Marauders can win out and finish the regular season at 38-9, it will represent the most regular season wins for a Millersville team since the 2000 club won 43.
• Millersville is focusing on reaching its third consecutive NCAA Atlantic Regional and fourth in the last five seasons. The first NCAA regional rankings were released Wednesday evening with the Marauders positioned fourth. Only six teams reach the regional field, and two spots are occupied by the conference tournament winners from the PSAC and CIAA. The Mountain East does not receive an automatic bid as it completes its probationary period with the NCAA as a new conference.
• While Millersville's offense--ranked third in the PSAC with a .338 batting average--has captured the majority of the headlines this season, Millersville's pitching has been strong as well, ranking second in the PSAC in team ERA at 3.77. The staff's .243 batting average against is second in the league. Chris Murphy, Brandon Miller and Jim McDade ranke 1-2-3 in the PSAC in innings pitched. Murphy and Miller are tied for the PSAC lead in wins with nine, and the duo ranks second and seventh respectively in ERA. Miller is fifth in strikeouts and Murphy is sixth. That Marauder trio won't be in action on Thursday as they await Mansfield this weekend. The ball likely goes to Steven Ghiardi on Thursday. Ghiardi has made one start but has logged just 2.2 innings this season. USciences' offense owns a batting average of .213 and averages 7.0 strikeouts per game. No player on the team is hitting over .300.
• Those stats stand in stark contrast to Millersville's. Of the 10 Marauders with at least 15 starts, eight are hitting above .300 and three are at .400 or higher. Only 11 Marauders since 1970 have finished the season over .400. Zach Stone in 2013 was the first in 11 seasons to do it. David Summerfield leads the way at .426, which is the best mark by a Marauder since 1997. Dan Stoltzfus is having a monster season. After hitting two home runs in his first two seasons combined, he has 10 in 2015 and already ranks second in program history for the most RBIs in a season with 57. That mark is good for third in the PSAC. Stoltzfus is certainly staking a claim for PSAC East Player of the Year honors. Among all Eastern Division players, Stoltzfus ranks first in RBIs, second in slugging percentage, third in homers, fourth in batting average, fourth in doubles and fifth in on base percentage.
