Harrisburg, Pa. - With Conor Gilbert and Robby Rowe leading the way with top-five finishes, the Millersville men's golf team tied for second at the Messiah Spring Classic held at Blue Ridge Country Club.
The 15-team field was made up of numerous area programs and Lancaster County's Franklin & Marshall took first place with Millersville sharing second with host Messiah. Millersville was the lone Division II team in the field. The Marauders posted a 20-over-par 308 while F&M carded a 12-over-par 300.
Gilbert continued his fine play in the spring. He's placed fourth or higher in all four tournaments he's played. Thursday's runner-up performance was his second of the spring. Gilbert finished one shot behind medalist Harry Richards of F&M with a 1-over-par 73. Gilbert's round included a 2-under-par front nine. But he bogeyed three of the first four holes on the back side. He steadied himself with three-straight pars and birdied the par-5 17th to move into a tie for second.
Rowe posted a 4-over-par 76, tying for fifth and posting his sixth top-10 finish of the season. Freshman Connor Sheehan tied for 17th with a 79, and teammate Rodney Anders finished one shot behind and in a tie for 23rd.
The Marauders sent eight golfers to the tournament. Matt Lutz and Bret Howey both shot 81's and tied for 28th.
The results of Thursday's tournament factor little into Millersville's quest for a NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional bid. The Marauders have put themselves in solid standing and ranked fifth in the latest regional poll. The Marauders travel to Indiana, Pa., for the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational this weekend.
