Southport, N.C. - Conor Gilbert opened his spring season with a strong, third-place finish at the St. James Plantation Invitational. The same cannot be said for the rest of his Millersville team, who struggled with inconsistency on a tough track in their first play after a long winter layoff. The team finished eighth in a 13-team field.
Even the usually rock-steady Robby Rowe had a tough time shaking off the winter rust. His streak of 15 consecutive sub-80 rounds came to an end with an 11-over-par 83 in the first round. Rowe, however, bounced back on day two with a 5-over-par 77 to improve his position by 13 spots to 15th--16-over-par for the tournament. The team closed the first round in a tie for fifth after shooting a 334. The team's score improved to a 328 in the second round, but the improvement wasn't drastic enough to keep pace. The winning team, Bentley, dropped its team score by 18 shots in round two. Mercyhurst moved up to fourth by shaving 26 shots off of its day one score.
Gilbert shot rounds of 78 and 76 to finish at 10-over-par for the tournament, five shots off the pace set by Gannon's Matt Barto. Matt Lutz, playing as an individual, saw his first action since the spring of 2014 and placed in a tie for 24th at 18-over-par. Freshman Connor Sheehan also competed as an individual and after a 94 in the opening round, he fired a 5-over-par 77 in the second to finish in a tie for 48th. Rodney Anders, Evan Choy and Bret Howey tied for 56th at 30-over-par.
Millersville heads to Wheeling, W.Va.,for the West Liberty Invitational on March 29.
