Millersville Falls Flat in Friday Contest

Johnstownn, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team fell to 8-5 after getting swept by Pitt-Johnstown (25-11, 25-21, 25-16) in the first of three matches for the Marauders this weekend.
Erin Harman was a bright spot for Millersville recording a team-high 11 kills and adding nine digs. Fellow sophomore Kelsi Ceriana tallied seven kills and led Millersville with two block assists while senior Brooklyn Smith led the team in digs with 12. Freshman Grace Dawson set up the Marauders 21 times and Alexis Hamm chipped in with 10 digs in the contest.
The first set was all Pitt-Johnstown as the Mountain Cats never trailed Millersville. Pitt-Johnstown was led by Maura Brehl and Marissa Erminio who each recorded 3 kills in the game. Millersville put up a fight early as they trailed by just 3 (8-5) when Erminio sent home a kill for Pitt-Johnstown. It was at this point the Mountain Cats pulled away, extending the lead to 20-9 when Harman recorded a kill looking to give Millersville momentum. This was short-lived however as Pitt-Johnstown responded with two points of their own, eventually winning the set (25-11) on a kill by Cambria Wierman.
Millersville put up a strong fight in the second set. Trailing by five points early, the Marauders fought back to tie the game at nine a piece. It was at this point where Pitt-Johnstown began to take back control of the set when Erminio sent home one of her four kills in the game to give the Mountain Cats momentum. Millersville would not go away, though, as the score was just a two point deficit late (22-20) before the Mountain Cats capitalized on a service error by Millersville and finished the set off with a kill by Kendall Mahony.
In the third and final set, Harman's team high five kills was matched by Pitt-Johnstown's Madeline George who recorded five of her own. The third set was the only set of the night where the Marauders held a lead, but they could not hold it. After back-to-back kills by Harman and Ceriana, Erminio responded with a kill of her own to cut the lead to just one point for the Marauders (14-13). Still, Millersville fought, trailing 16-15 when George sent home one of her five kills. When Harman responded with a kill to keep the Marauders within three (19-16), Millersville recorded an attack error and Erminio served and finished off the match earning five straight points on the way to a sweep of Millersville.
Millersville has two matches Saturday, the first being a showdown with Lock Haven (1 p.m.) before facing Alderson Broaddus at 3 p.m.
