Paige Produces Career Day in Loss to Bloomsburg
10/10/2015 7:03:00 PM | Football
Paige produced his first 200-yard passing game and the most yards passing by a Marauder since Connor Casey threw for 313 against Bloomsburg on Oct. 6, 2012. Paige's 24 completions were a career high, as were his two TD tosses. Tight end Tyler Zilen, who finished with a career-best five grabs, caught a first half touchdown pass, and Sean Quarterman made his second TD reception of the season in the fourth quarter. Paige also ran for one score. Quarterman joins Jamal Smith (2007-10) as Marauders with the rare distinction of throwing a touchdown, rushing for a touchdown and catching a touchdown pass in his career. C.J. Bostic set career highs in catches (5) and yards (70).
Do-it-all freshman running back Phil Overton had a strong performance in the return game, totaling 203 total return yards that included a 25.7 average on kickoff returns. He also added 16 yards rushing and receiving, giving him 219 total yards--the most by a Marauder in a game since David Coates went 242 on Sept. 15, 2012.
Millersville's offense drove inside Bloomsburg territory on six of its final seven drives and had scoring opportunities on four of them. Three times the Marauders converted touchdowns. Millersville trailed 17-0 when Paige piloted a nine-play, 57-yard drive that saw him go 6-for-8 through the air. It culminated in a three-yard connection to Zilen.
Bloomsburg returned the ensuing kickoff to the to the Millersville 48 and added a personal foul penalty to the total, setting up the drive at the 37 with just 2:20 left in the half. Tim Kelly, who went 17-for-24 for a season-high 188 yards, quickly completed a pair of passes and the Bloomsburg run game did the rest. Joe Parsnik ran in one of his three scores to put the lead at 24-7.
Millersville never got any closer. The second score came while trailing 34-7. That drive, which covered 68 yards on 10 plays, featured a pair of Paige runs for 13 yards and three Paige completions. Millersville followed with an onside kick. Bloomsburg recovered and needed just 2:34 and five plays to punch in Parsnik's third score.
Paige and Quarterman capped Millersville's scoring with a 14-yard hook-up that saw Quarterman tap his toes just inside the right out-of-bounds line on a fade pass.
Bloomsburg entered the game averaging 238 yards per game on the ground, and it nearly hit that average with 236.
Rasheed Johnson, the PSAC's No. 2 tackler entering the weekend, piled up 18 more, coming within one of his career record. He has double-digit stops in four of six games this season. Sean Dugan picked up another tackle for loss, bringing his total to 8.5 on the season--one off the PSAC lead.
