Complete Game Notes (.PDF)GAME OVERVIEW• As good as the Millersville women's basketball team has been at home (7-0), the Marauders have managed just a 3-5 record on the road. Wednesday's 74-72 loss at Pitt-Johnstown saw many season-firsts for Millersville. The Marauders lost their first game of the season when leading at halftime (9-1), it was their first loss when shooting a higher percentage than their opponent (9-1), first loss when scoring at least 70 points (4-1), first loss in a game decided by five or fewer points (4-1), and first loss of January (2-1). Thankfully, Millersville returns home to face Cheyney on Saturday and the Marauders have never lost to the Wolves inside Pucillo Gymnasium under head coach
Mary Fleig (25-0).
• A couple players have been playing very well as of late for Millersville including
Yasmin Cooper and
Aunjel Van Brakle. Over her last nine games, Cooper has averaged 9.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Also, despite her struggles at the free throw line, the junior has made five straight from there. She has registered at least 10 boards in three of the last four contests and five of the last eight. The Newark, N.J., native is sixth in the PSAC in rebounds per game (9.0) and tied for third in total rebounds (135). Van Brakle earned her first career start on Jan. 4 against Clarion and rightfully so. In her last five games, she has averaged eight points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from the floor. In two of those contests, she has earned at least 10 points.
• The Marauders winning seven of their last nine games and having a 10-5 overall record is largely due to the defensive/rebounding philosophy they have established. Millersville is first in the conference in field goal percentage defense (35.1 percent), second in rebounding (44.3), third in rebounding margin (+5.9), third in scoring defense (59.6), and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (30.3 percent).Â
• If the Marauders want to continue to win at this rate, they will have to shore up their free throw shooting. Millersville is last in the league in free throw percentage (56.4 percent) and on Wednesday at UPJ, the Marauders were -17 in free throws made (9-26). Millersville was 9-of-16 at the charity stripe while the Mountain Cats managed to shoot 26-for-32 in the same situation.
• In both of Cheyney's wins, Kyra Hines-Allen has scored at least 20 points. It will be crucial that the Marauders hold her in check on Saturday inside Pucillo. In last year's one-point loss in Cheyney, Hines-Allen had 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting and was 9-for-10 at the free throw line. In the season's rematch, she was held to just 10 points.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• In his second year at the helm for Cheyney, Kyle Adams has his Wolves with a 2014-15 record of 2-12 including 2-7 in PSAC play. Those two wins have come over the likes of Mansfield (72-69) and Clarion 60-53. The first was on the road and the second came inside the friendly confines of Cope Hall. Cheyney's unquestioned leader is Kyra Hines-Allen who is first on the team in multiple categories including points per game (14.1), rebounds per game (8.9), total free throws made (49), free throws made per game (3.5), total minutes played (399), and minutes played per game (28.5). The junior from Montclair, N.J. has led the Wolves in scoring each of the past three seasons and so far this season, she has registered four double doubles, the best of which came on the Nov. 22 game against Mansfield. That contest, she poured in 25 points to go with 21 rebounds and was 9-of-14 from the floor including 1-for-1 from behind the arc as well as 6-of-10 at the free throw line.
