Millersville, Pa. – Freshmen
Shane Ruhnke and
Ian Shannon continued to roll but the two rookies accounted for all of Millersville's points in a 36-9 loss to Gannon Thursday evening in PSAC dual action.
Â
The loss was Millersville's first of the season, dropping it to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC. Gannon (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) won three matches by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision.
Â
The 157-pound Ruhnke boosted his season record to 16-2 and scored his team-leading ninth fall over Garrett Smith, the No. 6-ranked wrestler in Super Region 1. Ruhnke, unranked this week, made a convincing argument that he should be after stacking up 10 points in the first period with a pair of takedowns, an escape and five back points. Ruhnke stayed on the attack in the second period and pinned Smith at the 4:51 mark.
Â
Shannon delivered a gutsy performance at 165 pounds against Casey Pace. After a scoreless first period, Shannon earned on point for an escape from the down position in the second. Pace took the down position to start the third, but Shannon did exactly what he needed to and remained in control for the entire two minutes, picking up enough for an additional riding time point and a 2-0 win.
Â
Gannon won the other eight bouts, starting at 125 pounds where Matt Turek, ranked No. 2 in Division II, won by technical fall over
Austin Camacci. At 133 pounds,
Sam Oberlander trailed just 4-2 in the final minute of the third period, but regionally-ranked Aaron Smith hit a quick takedown , nearfall and added a riding time point for a 9-2 win.
Â
Freshman
D.J. Mele jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second period. In the third period, however, Adam Weinell, from top position, worked into a cradle and picked up three points with a nearfall. He added one more nearfall just before the buzzer for an 8-3 final. Similarly,
Nico Demetrio scored early and trailed just 3-2 in the second period. He went on the attack but his aggressiveness backfired. After nearly hitting a takedown, he was turned and pinned at the 4:01 mark.
Â
Nearly an identical turn events occurred for 197-pound
Aram Moffitt. With the match tied 1-1, Lorenzo Maddox escaped from the bottom position 15 seconds into the third. Moffitt held Maddox's leg in a standing position and appeared ready to score two points but Maddox rolled up Moffitt and pinned him.

Millersville travels to Seton Hill on Jan. 11 for a tri-meet with the Griffins and Ohio Valley.
