MATCH OVERVIEW• Millersville squares off against Super Region 1 rival Wheeling Jesuit tonight at 7 p.m. Millersville boasts a 5-2 dual record while Wheeling Jesuit, in just its second season as a program, owns a 7-2 mark that includes an impressive win over nearby rival West Liberty. Millersville wrestlers seven of its final eight matches at home. In the latest Super Region 1 Rankings, Millersville was ranked ninth and Wheeling Jesuit was pegged sixth. Millersville's freshman class has drawn attention with the exploits of
Nico Demetrio,
Shane Ruhnke,
Ian Shannon,
Kyle Narber and
David Wuestner, but Wheeling Jesuit's young roster is just as impressive. Five wrestlers in the lineup are freshmen and the other five are sophomores. Freshman 125-pounder Dustin Warner already owns 22 wins, and 141-pounder Preston Bowshier is 21-7. West Liberty has seven wrestlers ranked in Super Region 1. Warner is ranked sixth, 133-pound Nolan Whitely is fourth, Bowshier is fifth, Reyse Wallbrown is fourth at 165 , Sawyer Leppla ranks fourth at 174, Ryan Winslow is ranked fourth at 184, and 285-pound Corey Siegfried is sixth. Millersville's lone regular in the rankings is Ruhnke, ranked sixth at 157.
• The lone common opponent between the two teams to date is Ohio Valley University, which Millersville defeated 33-13 and Wheeling Jesuit beat 45-3. Last season, Millersville topped Wheeling Jesuit 19-12 in the first meeting between the programs. Both rosters look very different this season, however. Only Leppla, Winslow, Lacy and Siegfried return for the Cardinals. Siegfried won by a 4-2 decision over
Ryan Nielsen.
Aram Moffitt beat Lacy 8-2 at 197. Winslow won in a close 10-9 decision over
Shane Gilmore, and Leppla won by a 3-2 decision at 174.
Austin Camacci and
Thomas Nulty both won their matches in the dual.
• With a 19-8 record, Shannon has overtaken Ruhnke for the team lead in wins. Shannon is 9-2 against Division II wrestlers this season. Ruhnke is 8-2 against Division II competition, but three of those wins have come against his own teammates,
Brock Thompson and
Seth Decker. Ruhnke is tied for 32nd in Division II in wins by fall.
• Nulty is having a breakout season at 141 pounds. Including his weight class title at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in November, he has won at least three matches in each of his three open tournaments. His 14 wins are third on the team and are more than the total of his first two seasons combined (13).
•
Zachary Yackenchick is expected to see his first dual competition of the season tonight, replacing Moffitt in the lineup at 197. Moffitt led the Maruaders with 19 wins as a freshman but has lost seven consecutive matches. Yackenchick wrestled in the F&M Open and most recently, the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic.
