Harbor Creek, Pa. - Looming ahead in October is the PSAC Men's Golf Championship, and the Millersville Marauders started a tune-up for their title defense by finish as the runner-up in the 36-hole Mercyhurst Invitational.
Backed by even-par rounds of 72 from Conor Gilbert and Robby Rowe and four rounds of 74 or lower, the Marauders fired the lowest team score of the tournament on Monday to finish just four shots behind Roberts Wesleyan. Millersville ended the first round trailing tournament-leading California (Pa.) by five shots, and its second round 4-over-par 292 was its best of the season. Millersville topped six other PSAC teams in the field.
Gilbert and Rowe shot identical 2-over-par 74's in the opening round and followed with matching even-par 72's in the second to place fifth in a field of 77 golfers. Chris Kupniewski of Mercyhurst took medalist honors after shooting 2-under-par on his home course. Rowe has now shot 74 or lower in six of his seven rounds this season, and Gilbert has posted a score of 74 or lower in four of his last five rounds.
Supporting the veterans were freshman Bret Howey and Rodney Anders. Howey topped his opening-round 76 with a 2-over-par 74. Anders' 74 in the second round was a career-low round, and his 36-hole total of 7-over-par was also a career best.
Also in action for Millersville were freshmen Evan Choy and Mitchell Burns. Choy placed in a tie for 33rd at 11-over-par. Burns tied for 56th at 20-over-par.
Millersville competes in the Challenge at Mystic Rock on Oct. 5-6.
