Box Score Butler, Pa. - There were no late-inning heroics for Millersville baseball on Saturday in the PSAC Championship game. After walk-off wins in the first two games of the tournament, the Marauders fell to Kutztown by a 1-0 score despite surrendering just three hits in a strong effort from senior
Tad Barton.
Millersville (38-14) out-hit the Golden Bears (30-19) 7-3 and had at least one runner on base in eight of nine innings. The Marauders, however, stranded 10 baserunners while Kutztown made the most of its few opportunities. The lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Ricky Gorrell led off with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brandon Martinez sacrifice fly. The tournament championship was Kutztown's sixth since since 1999 and it is the first No. 4 seed to ever win it. The Marauders continue to search for their first conference title since 1998.
Kutztown scored just one run in its final 17 innings of the tournament after it totaled six in the first inning against Pitt-Johnstown in the semifinals. Tournament MVP Brandon Shimo went the distance and somehow kept the Marauders off the board.
Chas McCormick led off the game with a walk.
Kurt Seiders, who totaled three hits in the game, doubled with one out in the second.
David Pine led off the third with a single and stole second base. Each time, however, the Marauders came up empty.
Millersville's best chance came in the seventh. With McCormick on second base and two outs,
Zach Stone scorched a line drive but it went directly into the glove of third baseman Brandon Cholish. Millersville went down in order in the eighth, and in the ninth,
Alex Ramsay reached after being hit by a pitch, but Shimo enduced a ground ball to end the game.
Barton (6-3) was the hard-luck loser. He mowed down the first seven batters of the game and rolled double plays in the fifth and seventh innings to keep Kutztown off the board and his team within striking distance. He allowed three hits, walked two and hit two in eight innings.
Millersville's season will likely continue in the NCAA Atlantic Regional for the third time in the last four years. The Marauders were ranked No. 3 in the latest ranking and a trip to the conference championship game only strengthened the resume. The NCAA selection show is on May 11.
