GAME NOTES
· The No. 23 Millersville baseball team is making its first appearance in the PSAC Championship game since 1998. The Marauders won back-to-back tournament titles in 1974-75 and in 1998. The Marauders also won a championship in 1968 before PSAC moved to tournament format. The Marauders won the 1998 championship by beating Slippery Rock, 2-1.
· Millersville is making its fourth consecutive PSAC Tournament appearance for the first time in school history. Millersville is 16-14 all-time in PSAC Tournaments and 9-8 in the tournament under Jon Shehan. Shehan is the first Millersville coach to lead his team to five tournament appearances.
· This is the third consecutive season that the PSAC Championship game features to PSAC East schools. Kutztown is no stranger to the title game, having appeared in two of the last three title games. Kutztown has won six PSAC titles including five since 1999. The last tournament title came in 2008. Kutztown does not have history on its side as no No. 4 seed has ever won the PSAC Tournament. A No. 1 seed has won just three times in the last 14 years but the a No. 1 seed has won three of the last four championships.
· After back-to-back walk-off wins to start the PSAC Tournament, it is evident that Millersville is at its best when the game is close. The Marauders are now 7-1 in extra inning games and 10-2 in games decided by just one run. The Marauders are also 27-0 when holding the lead after six innings.
· Millersville's senior class in the winningest in Millersville history with a 143-65-1 record. It has reached the PSAC Tournament in all four seasons and after being ranked No. 3 in the last Atlantic Region ranking, the class is on pace to be the first in Millersville's history to qualify for three NCAA Tournaments. Zach Stone is the career record holder in hits and RBIs. Tad Barton is the career record holder for wins and Adam Zipko ranks first in career appearances.
· While Millersville and Kutztown are longtime PSAC East rivals, the two clubs have met in the PSAC Tournament just twice before. Both of those meetings came in 2008 as Kutztown played its way to the championship. Kutztown beat the Marauders 9-2 in the second round and eliminated the Marauders 8-7 in the elimination round semis.
Under Jon Shehan, the Marauders hold a 17-13 lead in the series with Kutztown. The two teams split the season series this year, with each winning one home and one road game. Dan Johnson went 8-for-14 with seven RBIs against Kutztown this season. McCormick batted 6-for-12 with two walks. Zach Stone and Tyler Orris both had six hits in four games. Orris, who led the PSAC in stolen bases with 35, was held in check by Kutztown. He managed just one steal in two attempts in the four-game series.
· Along with nine saves, Adam Zipko owns a 7-0 record out of the bullpen this season. He has scored the win in both PSAC Tournament games so far with one hit allowed and four strikeouts in five innings. Zipko has struck out 13 while allowing no runs and three hits over his last 12 innings. In 13 career postseason appearances spanning 21.1 innings, Zipko has allowed just one earned run from an ERA of 0.43. Zipko's 76 career appearances is tied with Eric Eckert for the most in Millersville history. Eckert was also the PSAC record holder until Shippensburg's Austin Bartley set a new record with 82 this season.
· Zach Stone is on an epic hitting streak of 15 games. In that stretch, he has nine multi-hit games and a .566 (30-53) average. With two runs and two RBIs in yesterday's game, Stone has had a hand in even of Millersville's nine runs in the PSAC Tournament. His season average is now up to .403. At the start of the streak, it was just .311. Stone is looking to be the first Marauder since 1976-77 to hit over .400 in back-to-back seasons. Stone, however, has 373 at bats in his two seasons compared to Jay Johnson's 115.
· In 24 career postseason games, Stone is 34-for-88—a .386 batting average.
· Senior Tad Barton is expected to be the starting pitcher for the Marauders in the championship game. Barton is a two-time All-PSAC East Second Team selection with a 25-9 career record and 3.67 career ERA. Barton posted a 13-2 career record against PSAC East teams. He went 6-2 this season, and one of those losses came at Kutztown on April 1. Barton gave up three runs—two earned—in the first inning. That was all the runs he allowed, though. He threw six innings, scattering eight hits. Barton's career numbers against Kutztown are less than stellar, though. He has two road starts vs. the Golden Bears in the last two seasons and has surrendered six earned runs on 15 hits, three walks and four hit batsmen over 11.2 innings. His record is 0-1 against Kutztown. In six career postseason appearances spanning 21.2 innings, Barton is 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA and 19 hits allowed.
