Miller and Zipko Guide Marauders to Championship Sunday

Box Score West Lawn, Pa. - There aren't many decisive seventh games of a series in Division II baseball, but Saturday's NCAA Atlantic Regional elimination game between Millersville and Kutztown was exactly that. In the seventh match-up of the season between the clubs, Millersville received sterling pitching from freshman Brandon Miller and senior Adam Zipko for a 3-1 win and another shot against Seton Hill on Sunday at 12 p.m.

The teams had evenly split the first six meetings of the season, and the team that won the seventh continued its season. Miller (3-4) twirled the longest outing of his career, giving up just one unearned run in the third over six innings. He pitched his way out of sticky situations in the first, fourth, and sixth, paving the way for Zipko to nail down another Marauder victory.

Zipko entered with two runners on and no outs in the seventh and promptly walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Zipko faced the exact situation twice 24 hours earlier against Mercyhurst, and he escaped unscathed both times. The third time was no different. Zipko struck out the first two and then knocked down a liner back at him and tossed the ball to first to escape. Zipko roared through the eighth, striking out the side.

Millersville scored two runs in the third on a RBI double from Zach Stone that plated Mark Stuckey, and a Dan Johnson single between third and shortstop that scored Tyler Orris. Kutztown responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, but the Marauders carried that one-run lead into the eighth and finally added some insurance.

Dan Stoltzfus blasted a double over the center fielder to lead off the eighth. Kurt Seiders put down a bunt in an attempt to push pinch runner Dan Neff to third, but the throw at first base sailed wide, and Neff cruised home with the third run.

That was more than enough for Zipko, although Kutztown didn't go quietly. A single from Clay Sebesky in the ninth was followed by a strikeout. Ricky Gorrell hit into a fielder's choice at second base, but No. 3 hitter Brandon  Martinez delivered a two-strike hit to put the winning run at the plate. Zipko was unfazed, though, and cleanup batter Kyle Stoudt bounced to David Summerfield at second, who flipped to Orris, who stepped on second for the final out.

Zipko has thrown 9.1 innings in three regional appearances, striking out 13 batters without allowing a run. In 16 career postseason appearances, Zipko has allowed just one earned run in 31.2 innings.

Millersville and Kutztown split the regular season series, and while Kutztown won the PSAC Championship game, Millersville single-handedly knocked the Golden Bears out of the regional tournament with two wins. Millersville held Kutztown to 14 runs in the seven games. Since Coach Jon Shehan took over the Millersville program in 2008, the Marauders have never lost a season series to the Golden Bears.

Orris led the Marauder charge with three hits and a run. Stoltzfus added two to the team's 10-hit total.

Millersville enters the final day of the NCAA Atlantic Regional needing two victories over Seton Hill to advance to the NCAA Championship in Cary, N.C. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
