Box Score West Lawn, Pa. - In a NCAA Atlantic Regional game that featured 27 hits, nine errors and 33 runners left on base, it all came down to execution with the bases loaded. In the top of the 12th inning, Millersville's
Chas McCormick and
Tyler Orris drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to break a 3-3 tie. And in the bottom of the 12th, Mercyhurst loaded the bases with no outs, but
Adam Zipko retired the next three batters to preserve a 5-3 victory that pushed the Marauders ever-closer to the regional title game.
No. 23 Millersville (38-14) and Mercyhurst (30-15) traded three spots in the third inning but neither team scored again until Millersville's 12th inning rally. Zipko improved his season record to a remarkable 9-0 after throwing four innings and escaping a multitude of sticky situations. In the bottom of the ninth, Mercyhurst filled the bases against Zipko, but the senior closer fanned cleanup hitter Dan Popio on three pitches, induced a foul out to
Zach Stone at first base and ended the threat with a fielder's choice to Orris.
Millersville put the go-ahead runners on base in each inning from the fourth through the eighth. In the 11th, Orris singled with two outs and Stone followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Mercyhurst's Ben Nolan, who gave four-plus strong relief innings, escaped with a strikeout of
Dan Johnson.
The Marauders finally capitalized on a similar opportunity in the 12th. With one out,
Kurt Seiders hit a blooper into right field. The ball dropped between the right fielder and second baseman and Seiders never broke stride around first base and cruised in with a double.
David Summerfield drew a walk.
Mark Stuckey followed with a blistered line drive into left field. Seiders rounded third but Coach
Jon Shehan threw up the stop sign, keeping the bases loaded with one out. Laker reliever Colin McKee forced
David Pine to pop out but the top of the lineup proved its worth.
McCormick worked a five pitch walk to push home the go-ahead run. Orris fell behind 1-2 but battled back and drew the walk to bring in Stuckey. Stone drilled a line drive deep the left, but it was caught to end the inning.
The Marauders carried the two-run advantage into the bottom of the inning, but the Lakers quickly the put the winning run on first base with a single, four-pitch walk and a bunt single. Zipko, the school's all-time leader in pitching appearances, rose to the occasion again, though. He struck out Nick Cianci. Forced Angel Martinez to pop out to Pine, and then fanned All-PSAC West selection Ryan Siegel.
Mercyhurst totaled 16 hits to Millersville's 13. The Marauders received two apiece from McCormick, Orris, Stone and Seiders.
Chris Murphy took a no decision after scattering 12 hits and giving up two earned runs--three total--in eight innings. Zipko gave up four hits and three walks in four innings. Zipko, despite serving as the team's closer, is tied for the team lead with nine wins. Millersville turned a season-high four double plays in the game.
All four of Millersville's postseason wins have come via runs in its final at bat. It was the seventh postseason match-up between Millersville and Mercyhurst since 2011, and Millersville has won all three regional contests.
Mercyhurst's season comes to end with the loss, and Millersville advances to play the winner of the Seton Hill/Shepherd contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
