Stroudsburg, Pa. - Jaimie Wharton posted the lowest 18-hole score in Millersville women's golf history Sunday to win the 36-hole East Stroudsburg Invitational and become the first Marauder women's golfer to win three individual titles.
Wharton closed her sophomore season by winning back-to-back tournaments and is the first Marauder since the program's inception in 2009 to perform that feat. She surpassed senior Amber Rohrer's record of two tournament wins with Sunday's triumph. Wharton overcame a six-shot deficit by following her first round 81 with a second round 6-over-par 78. Not only did she set the program's 18-hole scoring record, but she also set the 36-hole record previously held by Rohrer. Wharton's season scoring average of 84.3 sets a new program record by nearly four shots.
Wharton chased down Kutztown's Devan Everett, who opened the tournament with a 3-over-par 75. Wharton's 159 total won the tournament by two shots. As a team, the Marauders placed third with a 701 behind Kutztown's 655 and West Chester's 696. Freshman Danielle Freed placed 10th with a two-round score of 177.
Rohrer placed in in a tie for 11th in her final tournament as a Marauder. Because of student teaching obligations, the senior had not played a single round in the spring. Rohrer, however, is the first four-year golfer in the program's history. She was the first Marauder to win a tournament and prior 2013-14, her first three seasons ranked one, two and three as the best season scoring averages. She also entered her senior season with eight of Millersville's top 10 single round scores.
Sophomore Kendal Olear tied for 14th with back-to-back rounds of 93. Sophomore Cara Geiger placed 19th and shot a personal best 98 in the second round.
2013-14 was a breakthrough season for the program as it won its first three team titles and scored its best-ever team finish at the PSAC Championships. All but Rohrer are expected to return in 2014-15.
